Thanksgiving Half: Week 7/11

Week-beginning Thoughts:
This is the first time in awhile I've started the week off with a smile.

Monday
Scheduled: rest
Did: rest
Had tentative plans of doing an easy 3 today, but felt kind of sick last night and this morning. Definitely a good rest day.

Tuesday
Scheduled: 5mi easy
Did: 6.38mi @ 9:26/mi avg, Big 5
SUCH a nice recovery run. Today was our first "cold" run of the year (47 degrees), so I enjoyed wearing a light long sleeve tee with my shorts. Run felt good and easy... if a bit long since it took us over 10min to hit the first mile marker.

Wednesday
Scheduled: 3mi easy
Did: 6.6mi @ 7:54/mi avg, Big 5
I'm in Chicago through Saturday for the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations Summit. Today was my best opportunity to get a "longer" run in, so I planned on swapping today's 3 with Friday's 5... but, once I got going, I realized that the only thing I wanted to do before the conference began today was explore the city on foot, so I went a bit further than the prescribed 5.

The only other time I've been to Chicago was in 2016, for my "comeback marathon". It was really amazing to feel "at home" in the city as I ran this morning, hitting the highlights, and triggering memories of that incredible weekend two years ago. Also, holy pace. I guess cooler weather + all the stop/starts made for a faster than anticipated overall?

Thursday
Scheduled: 1mi WU, 24x1min hard/1min easy, 1mi CD
Did: as scheduled, total= 5.64 @ 8:29/mi avg, Big 5, 2 hours of dancing
I was really excited to have another structural engineering friend to run with today. He had six easy on his schedule, so we went out together and I just ran up/back on my fartlek intervals.

Paces varied from 6:52 to 7:31/mi on the fast parts, which is pretty sweet. I felt good about this run. Running in the 40s sure is nice.

Friday
Scheduled: 5mi easy
Did: 13ish @ 9ish, Big 5
My buddy had 10 on his schedule today. I didn't want him to have to run alone, and figured if I were going to run 10 with him, I might as well just add three more and get my LSD in today. We actually ended up dragging a few more SEs with us for the first bit, and turning the first 5K into a "site visit", checking out one of the engineer's projects that was going up a block from our hotel.

This was a great run. Not only did I get to network with some other SEs, but I truly felt free today to just relax, enjoy being outside, and run however far and however fast I wanted. This was another day where I didn't want to stop running, but kind of needed to to: 1) avoid injury, and 2) get to the conference on time.

I don't know exactly how far I ran because GPS is screwy in downtown Chicago, but am confident I got at least 13 since my watch had me closer to 14. SUCH a great way to spend the morning.

Saturday
Scheduled: strength + yoga
Did: yoga, ~4mi airport walk
After another late night at the national awards banquet (and after party), I didn't get up in time to hit the gym. I did, however, walk about 4mi through Midway and enjoyed about 15min in their yoga room. Success.

Sunday
Scheduled: 13mi easy
Did: 4.5mi @ 10:00/mi avg with stroller, Big 5, 2mi walk
Super easy stroller run with friends. Good to be home.

Total Weekly Mileage: 36.13

Week-ending Thoughts:
This week is exactly what I need more of in my life: easy, stress-free mornings full of miles on foot. :)

I'm technically signed up for a 5K next Sunday. Still unsure if I'm going to race it, stroller race it, or "drop to the half" and just fun run that with the stroller... I'm super torn about it.

On one hand, I want to give myself the chance to PR a 5K. But that means adjusting my entire week of mileage to set myself up for success... which means not running with the ATC group on Saturday, and not running distance at all this week. You can't PR a 5K by running double-digit miles the day before (well, you might be able to, but it's not advisable). The course isn't bad, but it's definitely got some hills, and that makes it hard to evaluate just off the elevation map alone.

If I don't race the 5K, I have a cool opportunity to run an official half with a stroller. I've been wanting to do a stroller half forever, and this Sunday's race is a women's event that markets itself as stroller-friendly.

Basically, I want it all. :P I want to race a 5K and PR it without giving up my long mileage or changing my training plan at all to afford me any sort of taper, and I also want to have a half marathon I can run comfortably with my little one. I believe I have multiple opportunities for both, since I've already got a 5K on the calendar (11/18- Atlanta Lab Rescue) that's been a PR in the past and the Locomotive Half (that I half-attempted to train for back in 2016 and bailed out of due to muscle issues post-Chicago) in December is stroller-friendly. So, it's really up to me to just figure out what I'm doing this week and *ahem* "run with it". *snickers*
