Postpartum Week 3

Week Goals:

  • Achilles PT 2x/day
  • 1hr of exercise (walking, upper body weights, whatever) each day
  • Stick to the nutrition plan
  • At least 30min of upper body weights (cumulative)

Monday
Did: 1.14mi stroller run/walk PLUS Stroller Barre class, 2x Achilles PT

Did a short run with baby in the stroller, and then enjoyed a fun, free FIT4MOM Stroller Barre class, which was more of a workout than I'd worried it would be. Definitely an enjoyable way to get strength training in!

Tuesday
Did: 6.24mi double stroller walk, 2x Achilles PT, 15min weights
Got my 10K in walking the munchkins this morning, and nailed the PT later in the day. Also executed ~15min of weight lifting at home, by myself.

Wednesday
Did: Stroller Strides class with Fit4Mom, Achilles PT x2 , 10min weights
These Fit4Mom classes are pretty awesome. I've done "Mommy and Me" fitness classes before, but always found them lacking when it came to the "fitness" part; they seemed more social than workout. These classes are different. I'm definitely challenged with the upper body components, and inspired by the Ironman mamas who show up with 3 year olds in tow as well as the SAHMs who do these classes multiple times a week with their littles (especially because all the instructors also bring their children in the stroller). It's a really cool community, to say the least.

Plus, I really need the group accountability for any sort of strength training... (though I did knock out another 10min of chest/back/arm exercises with my dumbbells solo).

Thursday
Did: 8mi stroller walk, 1x Achilles PT, 10min Weights
With no daycare dropoff or Fit4Mom classes today, I found myself in need of a way to get my exercise in for the day... and a free morning. So, I loaded the baby up and set off for a leisurely long stroll at the river. We walked for about two hours, covering eight miles, and I've gotta say, the leisure life is definitely agreeing with me for the time being.

Eight Miles on the Riverwalk = Way Too Many Selfies

Friday
Did: Stroller Strides class, 5K stroller walk, 2x Achilles
Another awesome Fit4Mom class with one of my chorus friends and her little one, followed by a 5K stroller walk on the greenway = awesome Friday. Maternity leave is the best; I can just workout all day. lol.

Saturday
Did: 4.25mi walk, 2x Achilles PT
In-laws visiting = limited time for working out, but I got a stroller walk in this morning with my father-in-law, then did my Achilles PT.

Sunday
Did: 4.01mi stroller run @ 9:32/mi avg plus 1mi run/walk, 2x Achilles PT
After a week off (with the exception of short jog intervals during Fit4Mom classes), today was the day I'd told myself I could try running. I think the PT I've been doing has actually helped! Not only did I have a pain-free run today (it minimally sore to pressing afterwards, but this is even a slight improvement over what I ran through pregnant in July), but I've also been able to walk around my house barefoot all week (huge improvement from needing wedge sandals). Hooray, Dr. Google!

Total Weekly Mileage: 5.02 (run), 26.3 (walk)

Week-ending Thoughts:

  • Hooray, Dr. Google
  • I'm proud of myself for being responsible with this injury (time off PLUS rehab exercises)
  • Loving the Fit4Mom group and classes-- so grateful for something I can do WITH baby
  • While I'm frustrated at the slow pace I'm losing weight post-baby, I have to remember that the pace I'm at is actually pretty ideal and normal, even if it feels slow to me. It took 9 months to put all this on, and I can't expect it to be off in much less than a couple months at a healthy rate...

Postpartum Week 1

Week-beginning Thoughts:
Kind of can't believe that I had a baby last week, but I feel so good.

Monday
Did: 15min strength plus 2.04mi stroller walk

Tuesday
Did: 6.78mi double stroller walk
Had to make 10KTuesday happen, so I walked my older kiddo to/from daycare with the double today.

Wednesday
Did: 30min strength workout plus 4.05mi stroller walk

Strength workout: https://youtu.be/CIxNJbit9BA

Thursday
Did: 6.73mi double stroller walk

sometimes I hate my uphill driveway

Friday
Did: 1.52mi treadmill walk
Better than nothin'

Saturday
Did: 4.60mi run/walk (1.52mi run @ 9:07/mi avg)
Woo, I'm back to running a little bit. Took today's family outing and enjoyed a few 400m and 800m runs just to see how my body handled it. So far, so good.

Sunday
Did: 4.23mi stroller run/walk (2.5mi @ 9:47/mi avg)
Took older one out for our Sunday Runday date. It felt SO good to run :D

Total Weekly Mileage: 4.02mi run, 26mi walk

Week-ending Thoughts:
  1. Hell yeah. I just logged a 30mi week.
  2. Achilles is still a semi-issue. It hasn't gotten any worse, but hasn't gotten much better. It doesn't hurt when I'm active; taping it feels better; and the only issue is some soreness when I press on it at the insertion point. Guess I'll just kind of keep on keeping on since I'm kind of unwilling to not to anything and try giving it complete rest... :P

40 Weeks Pregnant

Week-beginning Thoughts:
Another Monday...

Monday
Did: 3.13mi @ 10:48/mi avg
This run felt GREAT. Not only was it a nice distraction from being overdue with Baby #2, but there was a great breeze along my route. Here's hoping this is my last run with the Bump...

Tuesday
Did: 4.08mi walk PLUS labor and delivery of a baby PLUS extra walking to hit 10K steps
Woke up to contractions, and decided that walking part of 10KT was an ideal way to distract myself from them (and hopefully keep things going). I walked the same time duration that it took my training partner to do her 10K, showered, and had the perfect amount of time to comfortably get to the hospital and have my second little one before lunch. :)

things that go bump in the night

we've shared SO many miles together <3

Bonus: I felt so good after delivery that we spent the evening strolling around the L+D wing to hit 10,000 steps for the day.

Wednesday
Did: rest

Thursday
Did: rest

Friday
Did: rest

Saturday
Did: 3.12mi stroller walk
I can't believe our whole family was feeling healthy and conscious enough to get out and about today, but we were. Our older kiddo rode a bike while my husband chased him on foot, and I followed (and sometimes led) with our newest squishy in the stroller.

Sunday
Did: 3.12mi treadmill walk
I had a little soreness yesterday due to my tear, and a lot of achilles soreness, which confuses me because I've been off for a few days, and dropped ~12lbs, but whatever. I guess that's what I get for not taping myself before yesterday's walk. I taped today, wore normal tennis shoes (for the heel lift), and enjoyed a solid walk on my treadmill. It's amazing to me that, five days after delivery, I both want to be doing this and CAN physically do this. Honestly, my biggest trouble is just finding appropriate support for my post-delivery chest... lol

Total Weekly Mileage: 3.13mi run, 10.3mi walk

Total Pregnant Running Mileage: 1254

Week-ending Thoughts:

  • Y'all, I birthed a baby this week. <3
  • Recovery has gone SO much better for this one than it did for my first, and I'm so grateful for that. :D

Running at 39 Weeks Pregnant

Week-beginning Thoughts:
Alright, this kid can come anytime after 10KTuesday....

Monday
Did: 2.72mi with stroller @ 10:48/mi avg

Ran the little one to daycare this morning :)

Tuesday
Did: 6.29mi @ 11:11/mi avg, chorus
This was such a fun run. Not only was I celebrating the fact that, 5 days from my due date, I was happily, comfortably running a 10K, but we were doing it in a cool torrential downpour of rain through tons of puddles, which was just... fun. Like, I was literally smiling the whole time. So grateful to have made it this far and be able to still enjoy runs. That said, I've definitely gotten to the point where a 6mi run, though comfortable, is kind of boring. I'm just getting through the mileage, and definitely ready for the next "thing".

Bonus: new short haircut was awesome in the rain

Wednesday
Did: 2.77mi walk with stroller
Daycare pickup walk :)

Thursday
Did: 1mi WU, 1600/400, 1200/400, 800/400, 400/400, 1mi CD = 5.66mi @ 9:20/mi avg plus 2.77mi walk with stroller
Today was an unexpected win, thanks to the 66 degree weather. Omigosh, SO NICE.
T-3 days
1600: 9:07 (9:29 prev week, 9:48 before that)
1200: 6:26 (6:54 prev week, 7:16 before that)
800: 3:58 (4:08 prev week, 4:38 before that)
400: 1:41 (2:01 prev week, 2:05 before that)

Um, what? Weather makes a difference.

Friday
Did: 2.07mi with stroller @ 10:48/mi avg, ~2mi walk with stroller
Had a chill two mile run with the stroller this morning along the river. It felt good to have a super short distance goal for the day (just enough to hit 1250mi pregnant), and stop a few times along the way to discuss wildlife or have a picnic with some geese with my little one. After coffee and a shower, we returned to the river for another two-ish miles walking with a friend and her newborn.

Saturday
Did: 5K Stroller Race in 28:45
Last time I was pregnant, I ended up delivering the day I was supposed to be running a race. Therefore, deciding to do a race the day before my due date this time seemed like the ideal way to jinx myself into labor. (Spoiler alert: it didn't work)

We got the family up and out early in the morning, and headed over to the one 5K I could find within a 30min drive of our house on July 27. I was thrilled to have seen strollers weren't just permitted, but there were NO seeding requirements at all for them, which meant I could have a fun race with both my little ones :D

I figured I'd run around a 33-35min race, especially since:
1) I'd probably want to stop an pee somewhere
2) it was probably a hilly course... 'cause Atlanta
3) I've been running high-10s as my go-to pace for the past few weeks

Nope. I didn't need to pee at all. The course was pretty flat (by ATL standards) and mostly shaded. Finally, the stroller gave me a momentum boost on the downhills, and race-day adrenaline kicked in for the rest. Not only did I finish well under 30min (WHAT?!?!), but, since it was a smaller race, my munchkin(s) and I took home a 1st Place AG medal. The only thing that could have improved the day would have been doing into labor afterwards...

Sunday
Did: ~3.5mi walking
Thought I might've been going into labor last night, but noooooope. Having my parents around thwarted running plans for the morning, and evening running just doesn't happen, so I settled for a little over a 5K of walking... some of which may have been around the park with a giant waffle cone filled with chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream (aka dinner when you're hormonal and still very pregnant on your due date).

Total Weekly Mileage: 19.86mi run, 10.5mi walk

Total Pregnancy Running Mileage: 1254

Week-ending Thoughts:
All this talk about how running/walking/being active induces labor is CRAP.

Training for Something: Week 1... NOT

Week-beginning Thoughts:
I'm ready to train for something, but it's hard to plan when you have no idea what the next few months will bring, and can't really afford to put your whole life on hold to truly commit to something.

I've volunteered (or more been "volun-told", since I'm supposedly the most qualified/available) to lead a pretty big project, but it's start date isn't solid. It could start next month or it could start next year, but whenever it starts, I'm pretty much locked into it for at least a year, which means no major training efforts during that time.

So, I've narrowed down my options to:

  1. The Grand Prix mile at All-Comers on May 8 (three weeks from today)
  2. Peachtree on July 4

The mile gives me a short burn, and less "risk" of training getting interrupted by project duties.... but the race is at 7:30pm (not ideal for me) on a weekday, and I only have three weeks for a short mini-training cycle. Peachtree is a longer cycle, but, huge project could potentially start up in the three months between now and then. But, if the project is still on hold in July and I don't train for it, I'll be kicking myself.

Ugh.

So, I've decided to do a few good workouts this week that could apply to either program, including an indicator run on Thursday to get a good, solid measure of where I'm at right now. And then we'll go from there.

Monday
Planned: 2mi, bootcamp
DId: 2mi @ 9:44/mi avg in 20mph headwinds, Big 5, bootcamp
It's April in Atlanta, and today's "feels like" was 31... with 20mph winds. Oof. Slow run, but got it done.

Bootcamp was a toughie. I found myself struggling to keep form without resting during the work period on a lot of these, and made a few modifications.

Tuesday
Planned: 10KTuesday, ONB
Did: 6.32mi @ 9:06/mi avg, more like a pseudo-tempo run, Big 5
Of course it would be freezing two days AFTER I put all my winter running clothes away for the season.
feels like 29 degrees?!?!

Ugh. Nixed today's ONB plan when I saw the weather, but ended up doing a pretty quick pace anyways. We had a 9:45/mi to start, a 9:10 for Mile 2, and then dropped into the 8s for the rest of the run. Not the ONB I'd planned, but I'll consider this a win. 10 of my last 14 runs have been around or under a 9min/mi, which is pretty out of the ordinary for me. I'm usually a 9:15-45 runner at best, so all of these runs that have been in the 8s is pretty exciting.

Within the first mile of our run, I stepped on something in the sidewalk. I don't remember what it was, maybe a rock? Maybe some random stick or other debris? My foot just kind of bent on/around/over it, and I kept on running without incident. I didn't think about it again until we were a bit quite on the back half of the run and then I felt a little strain. Probably nothing?

...

Nope. Definitely something. It's felt a little funky all day, so I'm resting and trying to massage out whatever weird cramp is there. Blergh.

Wednesday

Planned: rest day
Did: rest day
This was the hardest day I've had in awhile. I'm irritable, cranky, and a total terror when I'm not running... and this is only day 1. Ugh. Tomorrow is NOT going to be a good time to do the indicator run.

It's really hard to text your training buddies and say "I'm out for tomorrow", but I did it anyways. I hate missing a run. I hate missing my social hour. I hate not being there for my teammates. I hate acknowledging and admitting there's something wrong with me. I hate that I know it's wrong to say "it's just a bruise" or "it's just a mild strain", I ran through 10KT so surely I can run on it again tomorrow, even if it's uncomfortable. I hate that running isn't always "mind over matter". I hate that, sometimes, the best (and the right) choice is to take a day off from running.

I realized that if I can only do one run in the next seven days, I don't want it to be the indicator run. I want it to be my Saturday stroller long run. I haven't gotten to do that with my kiddo since September due to weather and injury. My best chance of making that happen requires me to take, at the very least, tomorrow off from running too, so that's what I'll do, and I'll hope for the best.

Google says this is probably a "stone bruise"-- a deep bruise from stepping on something-- or a mild strain. I can identify a specific spot that it "hurts" to push on, so that tells me it's a bruise. I can dorsal flex and plantar flex and pronate/supinate my foot without problems, so that tells me it's not serious. I can bear weight, which also tells me it's not serious.  The only thing that causes "pain" is "rolling through" on my foot when bearing weight. I really wish I had the right type of medical professional to ask what this was, without making an appointment for a week+ from now that'll cost me $120 and 2-3 hours of my time. Like, really, why can't I pay someone $20 for 10min of their time via videochat? :P

Thursday

Planned: indicator run
Did: Chair Cardio, 20min Weights, 13.2mi bike @ 14.8mph
Woke up feeling like my foot was fine... until I started walking. It's not hurt, but I still notice it when I go to push off. Ugh. Enter Caroline Jordan and her Hurt Foot Workout videos. I swear, these things have been a lifesaver.

I wanted some cardio, because I'm still on a calorie-counting diet and feel like, without burning extra calories, I'm INCREDIBLY limited on the quantity of food I can eat. So, I did her "chair cardio" workout: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lz0_ws7cjbI

It was... interesting. The exercises were kind of ridiculous, but did get my heartrate up, and, more than anything, I appreciated her constant mantra of "good for you, you can't do your activity of choice, but, instead of moping in the corner, you're moving the way you CAN today"... and her "refuse to quit" tank.

Instead of doing bootcamp, which might have had activities that stressed my foot, I did some weight lifting and core work at home.

3x10x15lb: chest press, chest fly

3x10x10lb: bicep curls, tricep extension, shoulder press, rows and bent-over rows
3x20: kimura sit-ups each side, crunches, penguins

...and then I spent my lunch break riding my bike, because I can do that without any issue in my foot. I don't mind riding, but really wanted to be running instead. Oh well, at least i got something in.

but, hey, at least I have all the supplies and know-how to make driving my bike somewhere feasible these days

Friday

Planned: easy 2 + bootcamp 30min elliptical
Did: 30min yoga
Got a brief yoga session in in the morning, and then proceeded to get sick or something during the day and couldn't bear the thought of going to the gym. Just wanted to go home and pass out in bed.

Saturday

Planned: 12mi stroller run 12mi rollerblade with stroller Xmi bike ride with trailer
Did: 15.3mi bike @ 14.5mph (oof, them hills), 1mi walk with family
Foot is STILL feeling wonky. I don't know whether it's getting worse, getting better, or spreading because it's a muscle thing and it's moving around, or if the sensation is because I've been babying it for a few days and now it just feels weird to use it at all, or what. SO frustrating.

Wanted to push the stroller on rollerblades while B&B ran alongside me this morning... but couldn't find my rollerblades last night. Thought about biking with the trailer alongside them, but woke up feeling blurgh still and opted to not stress my body out. This "listen to your body" BS is harder than you'd think.

I don't feel sick anymore, but definitely have a cramp in my foot still. I'm pretty cranky about it. :/

Ended up doing a bike ride solo, just to get some sort of activity in. NOTHING I could do on the bike aggravated my foot, so that was promising. I'm really glad to have biking on the super-close-to-home greenway as an option for activity when I can't run, but it'll never be as much joy as running for me.

...and watch that pace drop on the climb out of the greenway :P

Did a short walk (~mile) with the family before dinner, and ended up with a very crampy foot when we got home. I took a chance and rolled the heck out of it with a lacrosse ball and my stick... and, much to my pleasure, it felt a TON better afterwards. Now I'm back to just having a slightly tight spot. Still can't run on it, but I'm able to feel confident that it's improving.

Sunday

Planned 4-5mi with stroller
Did: 3.5mi stroller walk
It wasn't what I wanted, but I'm grateful that i was at least able to get a walk in with the kiddo this morning. Over the course of the hour, I went from feeling a tightness in my entire medial arch to just a spot near my heel, then just a spot on the top of my foot, then just a spot in the middle, then up near the ball... Basically, it was enough to convince me this isn't a break or anything "serious", but it is some sort of internal muscle issue. Yippeeskippy... these are the things that take FOREVER get over, with no set protocol for healing them or definite path back to health. :P

On the bright side, I had a good reason to wear my "not running sucks" shirt?

and, really, this view wasn't so bad... especially when accompanied by warm coffee
can't drink coffee while running, so it's a "perk" of being injured? :P
I'm seriously trying to look on the bright side. Like, a lot.

Total Miles: 8.38mi run (so sad), ~30mi biked, 5mi walked... and let's not forget that chair cardio

Week-ending Thoughts:

  • This sucks.
