THE PREP: Week 1/4

Week-beginning Thoughts:
Alright, let's do this. I've committed to four weeks of a new program, The PREP. Alongside those workouts, I'm planning to continue running 30-35mpw with one day of speedwork. I'm also committing to follow the Beachbody Containers/Portion Fix nutrition plan for four weeks.

I'm a little nervous about The PREP's workouts, because they seem kind of intense, but I can do anything for four weeks, right? Knowing it's temporary helps.

I'm not thrilled with the nutrition component either, because it's something new. I've been counting calories for nearly fifteen years, and eating "clean-ish" for about five (off and on). I like to feel confident and in control of what I do, so branching out into a new system is really hard for me. Calories make sense. You weigh things. There's a consistent, factual quantity. I use an accurate database of calories (MyFitnessPal) for my foods. Calories in - calories out (via Garmin HR monitor) = net calories. It's math. It's logical. I like it.

...but I'd like to see a little more change than what I've been doing on my own. So, I'm going to give Beachbody's program a fair chance for four weeks. Instead of in addition to counting calories (because I can't not track them), I'll be choosing my daily foods (both content and quantity) per their color-coded container plan.

Based on my weight, I'd fall into their "Plan A", but I upped myself to "Plan B" since I'm also running 30+ mpw, which means I get the following, daily:

4 x green (1c veggies)

3 x purple (1c fruits)
4 x protein (3/4c meat)
3 x yellow (1/2c carb)
1 x blue (1/3c healthy fats)
1 x orange (2T seeds)
4 x teaspoon (oils)

I didn't meal plan the week out, but I know generally that I'll be doing some sort of shake for breakfast, hard-boiled eggs or egg whites as a snack, and we'll see what else happens. lol.

Monday
Did: The PREP - Push, 4.01mi @ 9:54/mi avg
Nutrition: felt hungry a lot of the day, but kept myself on-plan
So, The PREP was actually a really enjoyable workout. I feel like it's the right level for me. I was able to do most of the exercises without modification (I started all the push-up segments on my feet, but went to my knees partway). I like having a known number of sets and blocks in each workout, and the 30min time was also helpful.

After the workout, I did an easy run solo pre-dawn. That felt nice.

smoothie + fridge-side daily tracker

Tuesday
Did: The PREP- Legs, 4.25mi + 2.0mi = 6.27mi @ 9:33/mi avg
Nutrition: on-plan :)
I'm never excited for leg day, but I enjoyed the exercises we did today and know I'll be feeling it in my glutes tomorrow. I was definitely hungry post-workout, but wanted to get my run in early and be done with it.

About halfway through my run, I realized it was Tuesday. I'd been thrown off since last program had Friday as Leg Day. Oops. On Tuesdays I've been running with my husband at lunch....

Today was a bit more of a struggle nutrition-wise. I had an egg white (well, one yolk, four egg whites) omelet with spinach and a bit of shredded wheat. It was gross, and something I'll just have to get accustomed to... :P

Finished out the day with 2mi on the treadmill during baby's nap... because 10KTuesday isn't optional. ;)

(I ate more than this today-- just only took pics of a few things to share with my Beachbody accountability group)

Wednesday
Did: 4mi run @ 9:16/mi avg, movie-side stretching
Nutrition: SO. HANGRY.
Yeeeeep. I'm super sore. It's actually nice to feel sore, because I know that means I'm working things that need working. Hammies are sore. Glutes are sore. Even my obliques are sore. Yesssssssssssssss.

Today was another struggle of a day nutrition-wise.

Breakfast was 3/4c plain greek yogurt with strawberries.

Mid-morning was 1/4c whole milk + 1/4c lowfat chocolate milk in my coffee.
Lunch was super delicious: 2c broccoli with 1/3c shredded cheese and 2 seasoned chicken tenderloins.

...and then it got bad. I was SO hungry all afternoon.

I had a small box worth of raisins. Still hungry.

I had a stick of turkey jerky. Still hungry.

I went on a 4mi run with my husband (yay), then had a shake of protein powder + spinach + strawberries + ice + cauliflower. Satisfying, but still hungry.

Dinner was a spinach wrap with lettuce, a chicken tenderloin, and some more Greek yogurt. OMG. Still hungry.

I've been tracking calories in MyFitnessPal alongside all my Beachbody container tracking, and knew I've been "light" on net calories these past few days, so I decided to ask for advice in my accountability group.

Almost instantly, my coach replied back, telling me I should definitely be on Plan C, if not Plan D, with the amount of running I was adding on.

Hallelujah GIFs | Tenor

The extra containers will definitely help.

Thursday
Did: The PREP- Endurance & Agility, 4.72mi run/walk with double stroller @ 11:24/mi avg
Nutrition: SO great. Very satisfying day :)
So, I thought today's E&A workout was going to be a lot of HIIT/SAQ drills. It wasn't. Instead, it was 2x through 6-8 fast-paced strength exercises, and then 5 sets of 30s of each of 3 SAQ-ish exercises. For the day after Leg Day, I found this workout pretty leg-intensive. We had a ton of split squats, lunges, etc. The strength stuff was alright, but the SAQ drills felt way too easy for me-- maybe it's because they were running based, and I can run for far longer than 30s at a time without fatigue?

I had some other distractions during the workout too (family emergencies that resulted in (3) separate 1-2min pauses of the video, and (1) 40min pause), so maybe that played into it. Overall, it just didn't feel as hard as I wanted it to? Guess that's a good thing, because I have speedwork later today.... though I'm still trying to figure out how I'm going to make that happen with both kids underfoot. Treadmill? Double stroller intervals?

...whelp. Speedwork didn't happen. My legs were tired, and I was pushing the double stroller on hills in the sun. Not exactly a recipe for success. Oh, and all I'd eaten this morning was a single smoothie and an ear of corn on the cob. I ran about 2mi, and then got a work phone call, so I ran/walked the rest of the way home.

Nutrition went pretty well today. I had a bunch of smoothies, just to use up slightly past-prime veggies, which contained:

  • protein powder
  • spinach
  • celery (oddly, this was a really great addition to my smoothie?)
  • plain greek yogurt
  • a dash of coconut milk, for fluidity
  • banana
  • frozen blueberries and strawberries

Then had some "real food" for dinner: a double serving of salmon, asparagus, broccoli, lettuce, and a piece of homemade bread. I actually didn't even finish all the salmon.  It's so nice to feel FULL again-- really glad I checked with my coach when something felt "off".

Friday
Did: The Prep- Pull, 5K @ 9:08/mi avg
Nutrition: Stellar
I was a little disappointed in today's workout. "Pull" is really supposed to be the shoulder/upper back day of this workout program, but it's really geared towards people who have a pull-up bar in their house. Don't have one? Oh, that's fine, you can buy one from Beachbody. You just have to mount it to your doorframe... which totally wasn't engineered for that type of load. No thanks. Also, I can't even DO a pull-up, so I'd also need to buy the modifier/assist. Blergh, $$$.

Instead, I did the kind of lame modifier for those of us without a bar at home, which was just holding weights out at a 90 degree angle in a half curl.

I followed this up with a pre-dawn 5K, which turned into a bit of a fun progression run, and added on a 4mi walk in the afternoon.

Food went well today. I didn't eat much in the morning due to wrangling kiddos and working out on the back deck, which meant I had a lot to make up for in the afternoon. :)

Lunch: spaghetti squash, asparagus, ground turkey, orange, and a slice of bread
Dinner: ground turkey + lettuce tacos with asparagus and carrots (and wine)

Saturday
Did: 10.36mi family run (with a last mile pick-up @ 8:09) @ 9:27/mi avg, The PREP: Range and Repair
Nutrition: Solid
Today's run was amazing. I felt SO great throughout the entire duration- so much so that I even wanted to pick up the pace for the last mile. Woooooo.

I'm actually most proud that we'd planned on a family Starbucks drive-thru post-run, but I turned it down. I'd totally earned it, but it wasn't even that I didn't want to "break my diet". I just literally did not crave/want a flat white at all. For someone who used to want these things daily just a few months ago, this is huge. Go, me.

matching shirts
fam was thrilled

I switched up The PREP's workouts between Sat and Sun to give me a more recovery/stretch workout today, on long run day. This was a great call. 40min of stretching and flexibility focus was just what I needed.

Sunday
Did: The PREP: Full Body Tempo, 5mi @ 9:43/mi avg with the double stroller
Nutrition: Eh, mostly solid.
Full Body Tempo wasn't quite what I expected this morning, and that's a good thing. Based on the name, I expected a HIIT workout. Instead, it was mostly weights, with some timing changes an eccentric lifts. I'm down.

Had a bit of a struggle getting out for the family run. Syncing up family wake-ups, bathroom trips, and fueling is tough when one of your family members is less than a year old, but we finally made it out a couple hours later than desired. I pushed the double for the first half of the run, which was super hard (maybe heat/humidity? maybe just week fatigue?), and was super glad to be done after our 5mi run.

Nutrition today was kind of hit-or-miss. I wasn't as diligent, and indulged in a double old-fashioned after a stressful morning, but still kept on track with my calories and more-or-less the Beachbody plan.

bonus: my Garmin tells me my VO2 max is now 50 mm/kg
sweet

Total Weekly Mileage: 35.5 (annual total to-date= 626)

Week-ending Thoughts:

  • I'm liking The PREP
  • Eating three cups of fruit a day is tough for me, unless I make smoothies
  • I'm definitely missing crackers, bread, and cereal
  • Only having a 1/3c of "healthy fats" (cheese, nuts, avocado) is pretty tough for me too. I didn't realize how much cheese I ate before?
  • All the changes I made to my diet during LIIFT4 helped. I have zero trouble getting enough protein in. Lots of hard-boiled eggs, protein powder, Greek yogurt, and meat.
  • My favorite veggies are broccoli, asparagus, and green beans
  • Oh, and running is still fun too... Is it weird that the 35mpw I'm running is almost "an after-thought"?

LIIFT 4: Week 8/8

Week-beginning Thoughts:
Oh, look, another week.

Monday
Did: LIIFT4, 3mi treadmill desk walk
Got up and right to work this morning-- real work, not workout work. It was kind of nice to have gotten through 3.5 productive hours of work before 8:30am!!! Treated myself to my LIIFT4 workout (LAST Monday. LAST chest/back day. Crazy!!!) before my 10am meeting, and tried to really push hard and lift heavy.

Then ate too much and had to go for a walk to earn enough calories back for dinner. :P

Tuesday
Did: 10KTuesday @ 9:19/mi avg
Got my 10KT in first thing in the morning today. I'd hoped to see the tail end of the meteor shower, but no such luck. Pace was a bit faster today, owing to my need to be showered by 6am for a curbside pickup and some GI troubles.
also, shoutout to Brad for four YEARS of consecutive, uninterrupted 10KTuesdays
Where do you 10KTuesday?
http://tinyurl.com/10KTuesday

...and did my third-to-last LIIFT4 workout of the program later in the afternoon. It was hot (even indoors with the fan on), and hard, but I'm pretty proud for pushing through all my reps with my heaviest weights.

well, I'm glad that's over with

Wednesday
Did: 4.23mi stroller run @ 9:45/mi avg plus 3.5mi walk
Morning run with my sweet potato, to read to "Little Tree". Followed it up with a 5K+ walk while my car was getting new tires.

Thursday
Did: 5.01mi double stroller run @ 9:24/mi avg, LIIFT4
Took the munchkins to the river.... and had to detour due to a fallen tree across the road + path. Ugh. It wasn't the run I'd wanted, but we got it done... and then rocked out the last lifting session of LIIFT4.

Friday
Did: 2.23mi run, LIIFT4
Last LIIFT4 session was a full-body HIIT workout. Uggggghhh, such a doozy! Still, I've felt so good doing all of these workouts, and it's been fun to be "part of the team" since the same athletes are working out "alongside us" each video. ;)

Saturday
Did: 10.XX mi run @ 9:34/mi avg, 0.62mi walk
Not really sure how far I ran today, since my watch was about a quarter mile shorter than my husband's at the end of our run. I ran somewhere between 10.2 and 10.4mi, though, and felt pretty good throughout. I did have a weird groin soreness/pain for a bit after the run, similar to post-partum and pregnant aches, but it went away quickly. Went out later in the day for a walk to cheer on a teammate who was doing a virtual Ultra. All in all, a good day.

Sunday
Did: 3.32mi @ 9:43/mi avg (maybe? watch is being funky)
My husband treated me to a morning of sleeping in followed by a solo run at the river while he manned the children. :) Happy Mothers Day to me!
Image may contain: sky, cloud, outdoor, text, nature and water

Total Weekly Mileage: 31.5

Week-ending Thoughts:
  • proud of my lifting accomplishments (LIIFT4 Recap)
  • happy to be running
  • grateful to be healthy

LIIFT 4: Week 7/8

Week-beginning Thoughts:
Week 7. Despite running pretty much every day for the past two months, sticking to my calorie intake, and nailing my LIIFT4 workouts, I'm a little nervous that I haven't done "enough" during this cycle to really see the results I want to see.

Monday
Did: 4mi @ 9:30/mi avg, LIIFT4, 2mi walk back from repair shop
Yessss! I finally got myself up and out the door before 5am. The first half mile sucked, but, after that, it was magical. I never regret getting up and getting it done.

Good thing, too, because the rest of my day SUCKED. Emergency trip to the vet + car not starting when I tried to leave the vet + calling a tow truck + dealing with car repairs = really glad I'd run.

Tuesday
Did: LIIFT4, 6.23mi
Clearly, I didn't learn my lesson yesterday. Returned to bed after my alarm baby went off at 3:30am, and didn't run in the morning. Got up and got my lifting in, but then had to wait until later in the day for 10KTuesday... ran 4mi down to the river then 2mi up to the repair shop to get my car. Weee.

Wednesday
Did: Yoga, 2mi run @ 8:52/mi avg
Enjoyed a nice, tranquil bit of yoga (with my cat, lol) before anyone else in the house got up... then finished with a fun, fast-ish few miles just after sunrise.

Thursday
Did: LIIFT4, 4mi sunrise run @ 9:14/mi avg
Arms/shoulders day during LIIFT4, and then a nice run as the sun was rising outside.

Friday
Did: LIIFT4, 4mi @ 8:48/mi avg
Ugh. LIIFT4 was an all-HIIT day. Blergh. I'm so glad there's not much of that in this program. Got through it, and treated myself to another sunrise run.

Saturday
Did: 10.02mi family run @ 9:36/mi avg, yoga
Another morning with my family on the greenway. Had some right hip soreness post-run. Definitely not going to attempt the Yeti 24hr challenge next weekend. (I'd loosely considered this after one friend did it and another expressed interest)

Sunday
Did:4.52mi with stroller @ 9:17/mi avg, 10min yoga
PERFECT weather for a nice riverside run with my littlest, followed by 10min of yoga at home. Hooray, running.

Total Weekly Mileage: 35.6

Week-ending Thoughts:
um, idk...

No photo description available.
no rest since April 8... maybe I'm due for another one?

LIIFT4: Week 6/8

Week-beginning Thoughts:
We're on Week 6 of this now, are we?

Cool.

Monday
Did: LIIFT4, 4ish mi run/walk with stroller @ 10:05/mi avg
Trying hard to maximize the last "build" week of the program with increased weights. Also got in a quick lunch run with the stroller, though I walked a few hills.

Tuesday
Did: LIIFT4, 6.23mi @ 8:32/mi avg as the Stay Home Virtual Half/10K/5K race
Anytime the baby sleeps 10 hours, it's a good day. Got up, worked for a few hours, got in a morning LIIFT session, worked some more, and then headed out for my 10KTuesday lunch run date with my husband.

Awhile ago, I'd signed up for a Virtual 10K race, intending on using it as a reason to do more than just run through one of my early morning 10KTuesdays. About two miles into today's run, I realized this was the week of the race... and I might as well take advantage of the faster than usual pace I was running alongside my husband.

...so I picked it up, without telling my husband what I was doing, and pushed on.

At 3.9mi in, I was feeling good. At 4.0mi, I was ready to be done... and checked my watch probably about 5 times in the next half mile, willing it forward.

It wasn't my fastest 10K by far, or even a true race, but it definitely felt good to push as a tempo run. I haven't done any sort of pace work for the past few months, and it was kind of nice to have a chance.

Hooray, we're done!

Sweet shirt.
"Run where you play have to, because you can't go anywhere else right now"

Wednesday
Did: ATC Core Workout, 3mi easy @ 8:30/mi?
Atlanta Track Club's providing some free workout classes during the pandemic, so Jerry and I thought we'd do Coach Amy's core class together as a mid-morning break. Nothing too fancy, but a nice way to spend 30min "together".

Went out later that afternoon for an easy run that turned into an unintentional fast one. Once I got going, I just kind of locked in an enjoyed the push. Felt good, though, to do the same pace on today's "easy" 5K that I did during yesterday's "race".

Thursday
Did: 5K on treadmill @ 10:00/mi, LIIFT4
I really wanted to go run outside today, but not enough to deal with this mess of downpour + wind solo.
blergh

After a lot of back and forth with myself, I decided watching a TV show while running was enough incentive to get on the treadmill. Starting up, even the 6.0mph felt insanely fast. I stuck with it, but it wasn't until 2.8mi in that I finally felt warmed up and wasn't constantly wanting to stop. Finished out the 5K, and proceeded to LIIFT4.

I think I say this every week, but I'm insanely proud of myself for sticking with a weight lifting/strength training program this long. I've always struggled with motivation to lift, especially solo, but this program seems to be jiving well with my current lifestyle and needs.

plus, I'm loving the "Weight Tracker" spreadsheet
SO MUCH VISUAL PROGRESS

Friday
Did: LIIFT4, 1mi on 'mill @ 10:00, 2mi on road @ 8:32/mi avg
I really wanted to get up and run before the dawn this morning. I set my alarm for 4:30 and everything.

...but then the baby was up from 11:30pm to 1am, and I couldn't get back to sleep until almost 2:30am myself.

After turning off my alarm at 4:30, I was woken up a little before 6am by more baby cries, shortly followed by my husband dropping baby on my lap/bed because he'd been hit in the face by baby's head and needed to get some ice on his cheekbone ASAP.

Got LIIFT in (last workout without weights! woooo!), then ran a mile on the 'mill while I was on parent-duty, then hopped outside for a quick 2mi on the roads before my husband's 7:30am meeting and return to parenting.

Saturday
Did: 10.01mi @ 9:43/mi avg, yoga
Another morning with my family on the greenway. Felt pretty awesome to be singing "Captain Vegetable" from Sesame Street (circa 1990) as a trio while keeping a 9-something pace.

Image may contain: 4 people, including Jerry Stasulis, people sleeping, outdoor and closeup

Sunday
Did: 5.01mi with stroller @ 8:49/mi avg, 30min yoga
"Treated" myself to a run at the river, whose parking lots have been closed for the past month. Parked offsite and ran to/from the main paths.

Total Weekly Mileage: 34.49

Week-ending Thoughts:
I "ran the rainbow" this week. Teehee

LIIFT4: Week 5/8

Week-beginning Thoughts:
In some ways, this whole self-isolation thing has felt like a vacation?

Monday
Did: LIIFT4, 3.79mi @ 9:00/mi avg
Upped the weight today. :) Feels good to be using the 25lb dumbbells for a couple exercises these days, even if I only make it through two of the three sets before dropping 5lbs.

Did an afternoon run with my husband-- felt nice to get out there together and catch up on the run.

Tuesday
Did: LIIFT4, 10KTuesday @ 9:00/mi avg, Big 5
This was my first #10KTuesday in daylight in... a really long time. When my husband offered to run with me at lunch, that sealed my decision to not get out of bed at 4am. I got my lifting session in before morning work, and enjoyed a lunch run with my other half.

Wednesday
Did: 3.0mi @ 9:20/mi avg, Big 5
Stress-relieving run.

Thursday
Did: LIIFT4, 3.35mi @ 8:32/mi avg, Big 5
Now this was a stress-relief run.

Friday
Did: LIIFT4, 1mi on treadmill @ 9:22/mi + 1mi outside @ 9:18/mi avg
What a patchwork workout day. Got up, sans alarm, at 5:00am, and wanted to run outside, but was on baby-duty, so I decided to just get my LIIFT4 done instead. Had to break it up into a couple sessions to warm a bottle, etc., but it happened. I'm so proud of myself for sticking with this program so long! It's always been hard for me to do any sort of strength training, especially SOLO, but this Beachbody program is really going well. One more week of "building", and two weeks of "shred it"-- whatever that means.

After LIIFT4, I took the baby down to the basement to treadmill. Made it one mile, and then needed to break for bottle for baby. At this point, my husband was able to take over, so I could finish my run.... wait for it.... OUTSIDE BEFORE DAWN!!!

I haven't run outside in the early morning hours in a really long time (well, besides the weekly 10KTuesday, which, was over 10 days ago now), and it felt SO nice-- especially since temps were in the 40s.

Saturday
Did: 10mi @ 10:23/mi avg, LIIFT4 Stretch/Recovery video
I did not want to do this run. Dark + alone + rain = ugggghhh. Add in some super sore hammies and glutes from yesterday's LIIFT4 session, and I was totally unmotivated to do the workout... but very motivated to have done the workout.

So, I whined a bit to some runner friends, knowing they'd check my Garmin later, and got out anyways, telling myself I could just turn around early and do a 5K.

I didn't. Within half a mile, I'd settled into a beautiful, hypnotic calm that can only be brought about by solo running in the dark. There were no cars, no other people, and no noises, save my footfalls and breathing. Beautiful. It also wasn't raining.

I enjoyed a nice solo nine miles before the rain came... and then I had a nice ending mile. Slow, steady, and just full of gratitude that I can do this.

Sunday
Did: 4.0mi @ 10:10/mi avg
Another morning where I really didn't feel like doing this run, but got up, got it done, and felt awesome for having done so. With storms forecast beginning around 9am, I either had to get right out of bed and on the pavement or hope that the kids would facilitate about an hour on the treadmill at some point during the day. Noooope.

My first mile took almost 11min, but my legs warmed up and it turned into a nice easy progression run, with lots of beautiful views of the sunrise along the way.

Total Weekly Mileage: 32.47

Week-ending Thoughts:
Shrug.
