Not Training For Anything: Week 3/3 (Half Marathon Week)

Week-beginning Thoughts:

I just want a normal week without travel or any "out of the ordinary" events. I just feel like I've been traveling SO MUCH lately. Even if it's fun, it's still stressful.

Monday
Planned: MBFW2 Lower

Tuesday
Planned: ONB 10KTuesday
Did: 6.64mi @ 9:51/mi avg, 2mi trick-or-treat walk
Of course, I dressed up as Road Runner for this Halloween run. :) I hope I made some commuters' days on their way into the office. Pretty proud, too, of the 10:04/mi avg pace for the out followed by the 8:28 avg pace for the "back".

Wednesday
Planned: MBF W2 Core 1 and W2 Upper, plus 1mi WU, Ladder mile/800/400/200 with 400m recoveries, 1mi CD
Did: as scheduled = 4.83mi @ 8:03/mi avg
I did this on the track around the soccer field my kid practices on, and seriously doubt that my GPS was accurate. Between both watches, I was still running WAY faster than usual. Probably a short track + wonky GPS that gave me more distance than it ought to have...

WU: 8:51/mi avg
Mile: 7:27/mi
800: 3:28 (6:44/mi)
400: 1:40 (6:35)
200: 0:45 (6:29)

Still proud for getting it done.

Thursday
Planned: easy 5
Did: 5.10 @ 9:51/mi avg
Yep. Easy 5 it was.

Friday
Planned: MBFW2 Upper
Did: MBFW2 Total
Yay, getting work in.

Saturday
Planned: rest day or a few stroller miles
Did: MBF W2 Core 2, 1.41mi stroller @ 10:01/mi avg
Worked in the morning, then got a core workout in, because I couldn't not do ANYTHING. Midway through the morning, I realized I'd actually signed up to stroller run tomorrow's half. Ew.

My little one wanted to come with me, so I agreed to try a short run with him through the hills around our house. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but I definitely was not in the mood to run 13 miles like that with the stroller.

Sunday
Planned: half marathon @ solid effort
Did: 13.25mi @ 8:59/mi avg

Total Weekly Mileage: 31.2

Week-ending Thoughts:
  • I'm proud of myself.

Race Report: Alpharetta Women's Half

 Previous PR: 1:47:02 (Thanksgiving 2018)

90% Goal: 2:10
50% Goal: 2:05
10% Goal: sub 2
Result: 1:59:04

Training: Let's be real here: I haven't trained. I kinda half-assed a few weeks of effort, but there's been no actual training going on.

Pre-Race: Parked about 50yd from the start, and sat in my car with the seat heaters on with my best friend until it was port-a-potty time .We found a friend pacing 2:00 at the start, said "hello", and then went on our own ways. I had no idea what I would do today, but knew I didn't want any pressure of keeping with a pace group or having a goal time in my head.

Race: I took off on the downhill, just wanting to run whatever my body felt. Turns out, it felt pretty flipping strong for the first few miles. This course, though, SUCKS. I think it's the worst course I run, and I only keep signing up for this race because it's crazy convenient and cheap.

The first ~6mi are "rolling hills", then there's about 4mi on the greenway (flat, but boring as all get-out) before running STRAIGHT UP for the last ~5K towards the finish, which is also uphill. Every year, I hate this course, yet, every year, I sign up to do it again.

I was plagued by visions of pacers for the first bit, with 1;55 ahead of me and 2:00 coming into view sometimes, but generally being being me. I hated the feeling of being chased. I wanted to just run, without thinking about pace or finish time, but that was impossible when I saw the little white flags and their taunting numbers.

The mileage signs also threw me for a loop. I wear two watches when I run: a Polar and a Garmin. This started because I've got a lot of history with Garmin and like keeping my stats in one place, but won a Polar and wanted to give it a whirl. Now it's a habit for me to have both on when running. Normally, they're not super synced up on distance. Today, they were... but both about 0.1-0.15 ahead of the course's official mileage signs. It was insanely hard not to get riled up feeling like I was running hard , hitting sub-9s on my watch when it auto-lapped, but seeing a 9:30 or more on my watch when I passed a mileage sign.

Around mile 4, I found myself comfortably alone on the course, between a few pods of runners. By the time I hit the greenway, it was even sparser. I liked it. I could just run. I told myself to "settle in" to the greenway, and enjoy the chalk messages one of the training group coaches had written every ~15s or so for the entire four miles. I felt some stomach/diaphragm cramps, and wondered if I was breathing wrong or just feeling yesterday's core workout, but continued.

It sucked. It sucked so much. I let myself ease up on the pressure, thinking I could run with less effort than before because it was flat... but then people started passing me, and I saw a 9:41 on my watch. WTF, was I really going THAT slowly?

Yes. Yes, I was.

Some mental math told me that, if my watch's distance had been right to start, I could probably 10min/mi and still come close to 2. Ugh. "Close". I didn't want to finish in 2:00:10, if sub-2 was a possibility. That meant I had to try.

I did something I never do and turned on some music, then shoved my phone back in my shorts pocket and tried to lean into the Luis Fonsi and my latino jams. It helped. My next mile was faster.

I counted down the miles until the beast of a hill around ~11. It took FOREVER to get from 8 to 10, but I got there. The YMCA hill at mile 11 wasn't as bad as I'd thought it would be. I slowed a lot, but didn't walk.

...but then the hills just kept coming. I walked for about 15s on the subsequent crest, thinking I'd probably be moving faster than my trudge/jog, then resumed the suck.

I hate the last two miles of this course. SO MUCH.

The entire time, I kept thinking I could keep a 10min pace and still hit sub-2, but then doubted myself because, if the course mile signs were correct, I'd miss it by about 2-3min. Can't let up.

I felt miserable going up the final hill and miserable coming down the shoot, but I could see the 1:59 on the clock and the 1:59 on my watch, and knew that I was NOT going to enjoy any sort of buffer. I kicked, hating every second, but was SO proud to cross that line in under 2:00.

splits

blue = pace, green = altitude/elevation (note the beast of a hill around 1:45)

Reflections:
Every time I run a half, I have this feeling that 2:00 should feel as easy as a 30min 5K (despite being about a min/mile faster), and am so frustrated when it doesn't. I ran a 1;47 pregnant four years ago. Why is it so hard to do this now? Why do I see Instagram stories of other mom friends who seem to be able to stay so fit so effortlessly? It's definitely hard not to compare/contrast and get jealous...

I'm proud of what I did today, though, and am choosing to be grateful that I can even be out here running and pushing myself. I couldn't have done that last year.

Not Training for Anything Week 1/3

Week-beginning Thoughts:

Three weeks 'til the half marathon I signed up for last year. I wrote myself a training plan, but just don't have the motivation to execute or try. I think I'm just working on progressing too many things right now to want to work at marathoning or training.

Monday
Did: MBFW1 Upper
Crazy hungry today, and ate so many granola bars from work :P
Legs are soo sore from yesterday's lifting. This makes me happy.
Had a crazy day, but still hit up the weights for my upper body after putdown.

Tuesday
DId: 6.3mi @ 9:39/mi avg
Easy 10K with the crew

Wednesday
Did: 1mi WU, 3mi tempo, 1mi CD = 5.18mi @ 8:41/mi avg
I'm starting to get into a routine for my off Wednesdays and have a route to run after daycare drop-off, which is great.

Miles felt so easy. It's nice to feel confident again: 9:08/ 8:37/ 8:20/ 8:06 /9:06

Thursday
Did: 2mi WU, 4x400, 2x200, 1.66mi CD = 6.36mi @ 8:52/mi avg
Today was the first arm sleeves day of the season. Hooray, cooler weather. I opted for a shorter track workout, thinking I'd do 4x400.

1:38- felt easy?
1:43- didn't feel slower than the first lap, but was by a good bit
1:40
1:43
Not the greatest splits, but I also had 9:22 as my slowest "recovery" 400 pace, so obviously this weather is impacting me a lot. I'm sure I could've done them faster if I'd actually recovered.

I didn't feel like I'd reached a point where the workout pushed me into productive mode, so I tacked on 2x200 at the end (46 and 47s, respectively), which made me feel proud and accomplished for the day.

Friday
Did: MBF Core

Saturday
Did: 10.22mi @ 9:43/mi avg
Nice run with my TP.

Sunday
Did: 4.08mi @ 9:08/mi avg
OMG, today was just ideal running weather. So much joy in these miles today.

Fall Running

Week-beginning Thoughts:

Thinking about signing up for a marathon... Maybe the Donna in Jacksonville this February?

Monday
Did: rest

Tuesday
Did: 6.3mi @ 9:19/mi avg
Life stress turned this into a bit of a progression run, from 10+ min/mi to 8:15.

Wednesday
Did: 3.22mi @ 9:49/mi avg, LIIFT4 Week 8 HIIT
Fit in a short run along the greenway between kid drop off and a doctor's appointment, then got the last LIIFT4 workout in field-side at kiddo's soccer practice.

Thursday
Did: 4x800m/400m = 5.71mi @ 8:31/mi avg
I didn't know what I was going to do today. In fact, last night, I felt so "off" that I wasn't even sure I'd show up FOR speedwork. During the warm-up, I thought I might start off with an easy 4x400. I'd thought about planning my training plan yesterday, but it didn't happen. I did get to the point where I decided I'm going to see if I like half training before launching into a marathon. After all, next year we're trying to plan a family Disney vacation, I have various BOD meetings for my professional org across the country, and chorus is going to ramp up since it's an International contest year.

My teammates were doing mile repeats. I thought about that, but realized I couldn't really fit in more than 2 due to time constraints, and our extended (1.75mi) warm-up. Instead, I opted for 800s-- a bit more in line with a half marathon goal than (4)-400m repeats.

I didn't look at my watch at all during the laps, and was SO stoked by my splits-- all well below my hope of an 8min/mi pace, and IDENTICAL.

3:30.3
3:30.0
3:30.9
3:30.4

Yassssssssssssss. What a win for the day.

Friday
Did: 4.01mi @ 9:23/mi avg
Felt a bit sluggish today, but got out anyways. Couldn't waste this weather.

Saturday
Did: 10.26mi @ 10:04/mi avg
TP was out this morning, so I had to go solo. Originally, I'd wanted to do a half marathon today, but just didn't have the mental interest in getting it done solo. More than "running solo", I've had a hard time lately feeling safe when I'm on the roads alone. I let myself sleep and wake up without an alarm, hit the roads at 6am, and had a great route with multiple police officers on patrol. My pace was definitely slow, but that's what a long run should be, right?

Sunday
Did: 4.11mi @ 9:30/mi avg with stroller

Total Weekly Mileage: 33.6

Sunday, September 24, 2023

A "Normal" Week... of 40+ miles?

Week-beginning Thoughts:

1. I'm gonna try to make this the week of consistency after last week's travel interruptions.
2. Maybe I should make a training plan for my 11/4 half marathon?
3. Racing a half marathon sounds hard... and long... and i don't think I really wanna race it. Also, I hated the Alpharetta Women's Half course and am not excited in the least by the idea of pushing the pace through it.

Monday
Did: LIIFT4 Week 8 Shoulders, 3.02mi with stroller @ 9:59/mi avg
I've got one more workout left on the LIIFT4 course this round. I started off really strong, but never really upped my weights throughout the program. The first time I did it was during COVID, and it was SO much better. I guess because I was home all the time and could really dedicate time/effort instead of "fitting it in". Oh well. I'm sure even half-baking it was better than not doing it at all.

I hadn't planned on running today, but, when I picked up my littlest and asked, "What do you want to do this evening?", the answer was "Can we go running?". I couldn't say no to that, so we enjoyed a preview of fall.

Tuesday
Did: 6.32mi @ 10:02/mi avg
Back in town with the crew.

Wednesday
Did: 6.37mi @ 9:11/mi avg, 3mi walking
I planned my off day out in advance this week, scheduling PT for 10am instead of right after school drop off to facilitate enjoying the morning time. A few weeks ago, I'd run with my TP through a beautiful flat-ish road with scenic views. I decided to plan a route that would let me run that at sunrise. I felt slow on the front end, but tried to play some mental games and make it an out-and-back so the return trip would be faster.

Splits:
9;45
9:43
9:52
8:49
8:37
8:10

Mission accomplished.

Thursday
Did: 4.08mi @ 9:43/mi avg
This run felt alright, but I was glad it was only 4mi.

Friday
Did: 4.06mi @ 9:53/mi avg
I saw an opportunity to hit 40mpw and seized it. I've hit this number exactly ONCE for a single day since catching COVID in Spring 2022. My legs felt heavy, but I couldn't tell if that was just the cumulative mileage or my knowing and thinking "you're doing something on tired legs".

Saturday
Did: 11.15mi @ 9:53/mi avg
Wanted 10-12. Got it. Another over 40mi seven day average.

Sunday
Did: 5.56mi @ 9:27/mi avg
Really enjoyed my solo run this afternoon out to the greenway, through the shade for a bit, and back.

Total Weekly Mileage: 40.6

Week-ending Thoughts:
  • I can do hard things
  • Grateful for my body
  • I think I might want to train for another marathon soon... (yeah, we went from "a half marathon is long" on Monday to thinking about double that in less than seven days)
