What's New: Mile Training is Back!

So, it's been awhile since I've blogged , but not since I've run. I stayed consistent with my TP's marathon training through October, culminating in a 20-miler. Then I won an international silver medal with my show chorus, attended a week-long professional conference immediately after., came home sick with the flu for two weeks, and then immediately launched into holiday madness. Weeeeeeeee.

After getting outkicked by my kiddo during our Thanksgiving turkey trot's final 800m, I've decided to turn my focus to speed in the new year and train for a fast mile. I have no ambitions of anywhere close to the 6:00 goal I had several years ago. I'm older, slower, and just a lot less motivated. My goal right now is just to get back to working hard at speed, and, honestly, to contribute a little more to my TP and I's shared training runs. She's been the only one training for anything for the past few years, and they've both been marathons. lol.

I knew I didn't want to start anything I'd have to run through the holidays, so I'm looking at a January start date. To help prepare, though, I ran a time trial last week, just to see where I'm at.

I was certain I'd be below 8, pretty sure I'd hit below 7, and thought maybe on a great day I'd wind up around 6:45-50. I'm glad I told my TP and family, because I totally wanted to back out the night before... and, the morning of, I was already making mental excuses for running slowly to myself.

The cool thing about this training, I realized, is that it's not just physical. It's mental. In fact, for me, I bet this cycle will be so much more mental than physical. It's about re-training myself to make it hurt, to do things I don't want to do in service of a larger, long-term goal, and the mental tenacity to keep going when you don't have to, and literally no one cares but you. How bad do you want it?

The trial went better than expected. It was cold and windy, but I hit a 1:37 first split and didn't die. Though the next few were slower, at no point did I actually feel like I was at my breaking point. I certainly wasn't comfortable, and was definitely pushing, but it wasn't as bad as I'd thought it would be. Thanks to a little kick from my TP setting herself up for me to "chase her" down the final straightaway, I finished in 6:48. Though I needed to walk right away, I easily completed a two mile cool-down jog, walked to/from school parties that morning, and wasn't even sore the next day.

Guess that's my sign I should have tried harder. :P

I'm kinda looking forward to training. It'll be nice to have a solid goal for myself for a bit outside of everything else in life. Plus, it's fun to have my kids cheering for me too.

June/July --> Marathon Training

So, things have been busy and keeping up with this blog fell to the bottom of the list.

I've dropped a lot of weight lifting this summer in favor of... I don't even know. I guess I've had more time home with the fam and that's made me less productive on a workout front.

I've kept consistent, though and even executed a 10x10K challenge while my training partner was traveling. Peachtree went usurpingly well (race report coming... maybe.... but, if I don't get around to it, I hit 50:51 which was my second fastest Ptree ever and a total shock). Now I'm about to start marathon training for a race I'm not even doing. Haha. Perks of having a motivated training partner?

This was the perfect return to the track workout. 200s are short enough to push, but not quite to the "make it hurt" phase when you're not pushing super hard.

Spring Break

Week-Beginning Thoughts:
Single-parenting week :)

Monday

Tuesday
Did: 3.28mi on treadmill @ 9:21/mi avg, 1mi walk, chorus

Wednesday
Did: 2.0mi @ 9:02/mi avg + 8.05mi @ 9:22/mi avg = 10.05mi @ 9:18/mi avg
Wanted a double digit run today, and made it happen in pieces. :D

Thursday
Did: LIIFTMore Legs, 1mi treadmill walk, some hiking with kiddo
Felt a weird Achilles soreness on the treadmill walk?

Friday
Did: 4.04mi with stroller @ 9:05/mi avg
Achilles didn't bother me enough to not run with my baby at the river. I was surprised how fast I was running with a stroller in 10mph winds too.

Saturday
Did: 7.52mi @ 9:53/mi avg
I cut this 10mi run off a bit early since my ankle felt a bit tight. Figured it was better to have a slightly sore Achilles than an inflamed and painful one.

Sunday
Did: 1.06mi @ 9:29/mi avg + LIIFTMore arms and core
Achilles is still a little sore, but only when I'm trying to pay attention to it. Got a single easy mile in to enjoy weather, but today was mostly about lifting. I'm pretty proud to have advanced from 2lb on some exercises up to 10lb within the past few months :D

Total Weekly Mileage: 30

Week-Ending Thoughts:
Is this what my life as a SAHM could look like? 'cause it's pretty amazing...besides the whole "money is only going OUT of our bank account" thing. lol

I kinda thought about doing something, but didn't feel like going out in the cold alone. I think I might've lifted a bit in the morning? Maybe?

Saturday
Did: 9.5mi @ 9:45/mi avg
Wanted ten, but didn't have the time.

Sunday
Did: 6.38mi with stroller @ 9:58/mi avg
Explored a new local soft-surface 5K park loop. It might've been great for just running, but the softer surface just made pushing a stroller harder :P

Total Weekly Mileage: 27.21

Week-Ending Thoughts:
Meh?

Drive to another state for work-y stuff

Saturday
Plan: 10mi
Did: 11.03mi @ 9:45/mi avg
So wonderful to meet running bestie for some early miles this morning while traveling for this committee meeting. We got to run Greenville's Swamp Rabbit Trail, which I actually found incredibly boring as a route (very similar to Atlanta's Silver Comet), but loved gettign to catch up in person with her.

Sunday
Plan: no training, or maybe training, but chill
Did: 30min yoga

Total Weekly Mileage: 30.0

Week-Ending Thoughts:
Zero motivation to work on anything specific, but just kinda enjoying the 30mpw status quo.

Some Sort of 5K Training: Week Who-knows-what/Who-knows-what

 Week-Beginning Thoughts:

Not sure what I'm going to do this week. I kinda wanna push myself a bit to see if it's worth signing up for a 3/9 race, but I've been feeling just a little "off" the past few days.

Monday
Plan: rest/yoga
Did: 3.2mi @ 9:52/mi avg, Zoo walk
Felt alright on this run, but it got a bit harder at the end and I saw a HR in the 190s, so I'm not sure what's up...

Tuesday
Plan: 10KT  easy, push last 2
Did: 4.22mi @ 8:53/mi avg + 2.02mi with stroller @ 10:27/mi avg
Woke up to my 10KTuesday alarm with a headache and decided to skip the group run this morning. Felt better throughout the day and opted to make the hashtag happen between work, kids, and chorus. I got a nice solo 4+ in before grabbing a kiddo and doing some stroller miles on the greenway.

Wednesday
Plan: LIIFTMore
Did: LIIFTMore and 4.03mi @ 8:56/m avg
Afternoon run = so much faster than AM...

Thursday
Plan: I don't think I really had one
Did: random triceps lifting during Jeopardy!
It's hard to run without a training partner in town. Opted to sleep in after a late night out for work and that was good.

Friday
Plan: 4-5mi easy
Did: LIIFTMore Back/Triceps + 2.07mi @ 8:48/mi avg
Morning lifting followed by a quick run. I think I run SO much faster after my legs have been warmed up through the day or by lifting early...

Saturday
Plan: nope
Did:  LIIFTMore Shoulders, JMYB, Chorus
Slept in after a date night, did a workout with my husband, then had 8 hours of show chorus rehearsal.

Sunday
Plan: solid effort 5.5 with stroller
Did: 5.25mi @ 10:00/mi avg with stroller
Woke up after a not great night of sleep and finally got out for some mileage with my littlest in the stroller (hasn't happened in FOREVER). It wasn't a super fast run, but it was fun despite the gravel trail.

Total Weekly Mileage: 20.79 (not bad for being solo most of it)

Week-Ending Thoughts:
I'm struggling hard with trying to do too much and having the things I care about happen at the same times... Definitely not interested in a hard 5K next weekend.
