Race Report: Resolution Run 2019

Previous PR: 6:14 (1/1/17)
90% Goal: 7:20
50% Goal: 7:00
10% Goal: 6:45
Result: 6:37 (holla)

Training:
Nothing mile-specific. I'm actually on week 4 of a 12-week 5K plan right now, and didn't make any real modifications to the plan to target this race.

Pre-Race:
Kinda half jogged to get numbers and bring them back to the car for husband and kid #1... that was about the extent of my warm-up :P Then I watched the kids' dash and cheered... and found a place a few people back from the mile start line, settling in near one of my other Masters elite friends. I figured I could use him as a pacer for the first bit since he's double my age and runs about the same pace as me... lol.

Race:
As the announcer declared there were 45s until the gun, I decided to enable autolaps on my watch for 0.25mi to help me know how far along I was (and keep me from checking my watch too frequently). Off the line, I felt SUPER comfortable-- to the point where I worried I was going too slowly, though my elite teammate was still only just ahead of me, so I knew I probably wasn't.

"Lap" 1: 1:33
Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn. If I could keep this pace up, I'd finish just over 6:00!!!

"Lap" 2: 1:48
...but I couldn't, 'cause then we had a hill.

"Lap" 3: 1:37
Yep. This is always the hardest lap of a mile. I had a little mental "ugh", but pushed through it, since it was an ONB course and I realized I was already on the "back".

"Lap" 4: 1:37
I felt powerful on this last quarter. Definitely wasn't race pace for me, but it was a hard effort. Of course, this means I could've (should've?) gone faster. :P

Reflections:

  • Super happy to have another "I didn't really train for this, but pulled off a 6:30-ish mile" race.
  • Definitely looking forward to training for another fast mile sometime this year. I know I still have a PR in me for that distance.
  • Bonus: I podium-ed---- third overall female :) Other two were 6:14 (my PR) and 6:30. The year I won the race (2015), I finished in 6:35. Definite motivation to actually train with this race as the goal sometime...

great start to the new year :)
