A Slow Comeback

Week-beginning Thoughts:
My plan for this week is to do some run/walk intervals every other day, and fit in a bit of strength training as able.

Monday
17min pre-dawn walk, 10min lift/core, 32min easy cardio
Since I "ran" yesterday, I wanted to give myself an easy day. I woke up early, though, and opted into a pre-sun walk through my neighborhood. This is the first time I'm been out to workout before the sun in over a month, and it just felt so good to be OUT THERE.

I can back in, did 5min of "strength" (lunges, squats, and some 2lb dumbbells) and 5min of core.

In the afternoon, while my kid was at swim practice, I did an easy workout.

Tuesday
4.00min 1/1 intervals @ 11:08/mi avg
SO amazing to be back with the group on 10KTuesday, even though I kept myself to 45min and intervals.

Wednesday
1hr walk
I'd say today's the first day I've felt GOOD in over a month. I've been active, but able am to wake up without an alarm after only 8-9 hours of sleep. YASSSSSSSSSSSSS. Did a lunch walk with my husband today, and felt like I might want to run because walking felt too easy. So grateful for that.

While the bulk of my body is getting better, my wrist is stubbornly not. I saw the orthopedist today and he said he's glad my wrist is improving, but if I'm still having issues in another month, he might want an MRI to see if I've got a TFCC tear that would require surgery. Uggghhhh.

Thursday
3.37mi @ 10:12/mi avg- few minutes of walking
First run with my training partner in forever. Ran as long as I want, walked as long as I wanted, and repeated. :D

Friday
MBF Upper Body, one-handed
Wrist is not feeling hot, and I was told not to do any lifting at all with my busted wrist until I've gone a few days without thinking about it/noticing it, soooo, bring on the asymmetric workouts. Still grateful for the ability to do something.

Saturday
4.02mi @ 10:25/mi avg with random intervals, 1.11mi bagel walk, 0.9mi Touch a Truck excursion
I've got enough energy back to do what I want. Now it seems to just be building stamina again. I can do this part!

Sunday
5.0mi with stroller 4min run/1min walk @ 10:37/mi avg
This was too much. Running for 4min was exhausting and I probably should have stopped earlier... Cut my planned 10K short and just walked it in.

Week-ending Thoughts:
I did something active every day this week, got a normal amount of sleep, did a LOT with my kids/family, and have not been fatigued. SO HAPPY. Now, it's time to get to work on a slow, controlled build back of strength and stamina.

One Month Since COVID

Today is the 135th day of 2022.

I've been unable to train due to illness or injury for 56 of those. That's 41%.

It's been a shit year for athlete me.

This week was about trying to find my body's acceptable exertion level-- i.e. what I can do consistently without any negative effects.

Monday
Since I went to bed at 6:30pm on Sunday and slept for awhile, I opted against doing anything today.

Tuesday
Yoga during kid's swim practice. Not sure if it was the heat or something else, but I felt kind of weak, even with a static pose practice.

Wednesday
30min walk AM, 10min walk PM
Put effort into researching this "PEM" condition my PA mentioned as a "worst case scenario" and tried to figure out a HR plan.

Thursday
10min AM "workout"-
5min strength (slow lunges, squats, and some 2lb dumbbell arm lifts)
5min core (planks, leg lifts)
Had some chest tightness after.
15min PM walk

Friday
10min AM walk
36min easy walk

Saturday
15min walk/run:
5min walk WU
2x30s jog/60s walk
1x60/60
2x30/60
5min CD

This felt good from a mental standpoint, and maybe good from a physical standpoint. It's so foreign to run that I kept second guessing myself on how much effort I should be exerting. The scariest thing for me has been that I've never felt any danger signs/fatigue DURING a workout-- it always hits me well afterwards, so it's hard to connect the two and really understand that the exhaustion I'm feeling might be from something I did 48 hours ago.

After my morning workout, I headed down to a big event day at Atlanta Track Club for the In-Training for Peachtree program. I'm a "virtual" Run Lead this season, helping participants from behind a computer screen instead of running with them on a weekly basis. As a special motivator, though. all training participants were invited to a big "party" day at HQ this week, so I came in case any of my virtual trainees would be there and want to meet me in person.

It was surreal to be back at ATC, where I've made so many memories running, but not run. I held it together though until everyone had left for their run, and then cried on the way to my car. It's really, really hard to not be able to do what you love.

The day turned around after that, and I was able to do a 30min Beachbody workout. When I first subscribed two years ago, I found the only Spanish-language program they had, and was soooooo disappointed by how un-intense it was. Today, that was exactly what I needed. I modified the heck out of that workout, and felt happy to at least be able to do something normal-ish.

Sunday
3.11mi @ 11:08/mi avg, 1min run/1min walk intervals
This run felt harder than I'd expected, but so joyful.

Week Wrap-up
I've been able to fully function in my daily life this week without any problems. This is a HUGE win. I'm still needing a lot of sleep compared to pre-COVID, but my body is starting to be able to wake up around 5-5:30am on its own.

A COVID Timeline/Update

It's been a month, and I'm still dealing with:
  • post-nasal drip/stuffy head feeling
  • occasional chest tightness
  • feelings of elevated heart rate
  • fatigue, but also insomnia
  • worse fatigue that seems to hit about a day after exertion
What I've done:
  • yoga-- a 30s plank had my muscles shaking, and my HR was up in the 100s doing static yoga (not flow)
  • walks- while I've been able to do a couple walks over 30min without any issues during activity, both of them have left me with heavy fatigue afterwards
While it's not completely accurate, it's been interesting to see my GPS watch's assessment of my fitness deterioration:

Red vertical lines are effort for individual activities/workouts
Blue is my stamina level
Purple is my effort level

COVID hit me mid-April, and it's depressing to see how much I've lost, to the point where those last few red blips are WALKS and were so much in excess of where my stamina level is.

A COVID Timeline

Day -3
After a rough night with a sick kiddo (not COVID, though), I had a super strong 10KTusesday workout-- first time averaging a sub-9 in awhile, and I felt great doing it. This was my first workout in awhile where I finally felt like I might be back on track fitness-wise.

...then I went to show chorus that night, unmasked because essentially everyone in the chorus is vaccinated, and since no one else was masked, it seemed "okay".

Day -2
Started my new job, and did a bit of light running after work before the kids' race. Running felt a little harder than usual, but I figured it was because it was afternoon, hilly, and I was stressing about getting to my kids race on time and still having my wrist in a brace from the sprain last wee

Day -1

Opted out of running this morning because we'd gotten home late last night, but did a HIIT workout instead. Lunges and squat jumps felt harder than usual, but I figured it was carryover from being tired and the speedwork on Thursday.

Started getting a bit of a dry throat later this evening, but figured it was whatever my kiddo had been home sick with on Tuesday.

Day 0
Felt fine, if a bit tired, in the morning and had a pretty great 2x2mi tempo workout, for a total of 7.6mi before work. My throat was dry after the workout, and I opted for honey tea as a morning beverage. Mid-morning, I had a bit of a headache/backache, and figured it was due to sitting in a chair for 8 hours multiple days in a row after being off work for a month (typical for me upon returning to an office setting after a break).

This feeling, however, got worse by afternoon. I found out from our chorus FB group that someone I'd been near had tested positive, and then had a flurry of messages with others who were symptomatic and testing... so I left work and headed straight for a PCR center.

By the time I got home, I was feverish, headache-y, and had such terrible body pains that walking normally was difficult. I locked myself in the basement bedroom with some rapid tests, ibuprofen, and Nyquil. I tested positive and clocked a 104 fever.

Day 1
Fever broke at some point in the morning, and I woke up drenched. My fever was only ~101 for the day, with intense head/body aches. I did feel well enough to change my sheets later in the afternoon, though, but spent the day sleeping.

Day 2
Fever down to 99/100, intense headache and body aches. Another day of sleep.

Day 3
No fever, but crippling headache and lingering body aches. Finally felt well enough for some Netflix, with napping. Still sleeping ~12 hours overnight.

Day 4
Terrible stuffy nose and headache. Netflix and napping.

Day 5
Congestion and headache. Netflix and napping. Thought I might be able to work a few hours from home tomorrow.

Day 6
Congestion. Lingering fatigue. Was only awake about 6 hours today.

Day 7
Still testing positive. Walked ~mile throughout the day. Napped a lot.

Day 8
Finally tested negative. Walked a few miles with the stroller, slowly. Napped. Still feeling fatigued and post-nasal drip in throat.

Day 9
Walked a few miles with stroller. Napped. Still feeling fatigued and post-nasal drip in throat.

Day 10
Went to work. Still feeling fatigued and post-nasal drip in throat.

Day 11
Considered getting up to walk a bit on 10KTuesday... but just couldn't muster the energy. Went to work. Still feeling fatigued and post-nasal drip in throat.

Day 12
No work today (I'm off). Did a couple mile walk, and felt tired during and after. Opted to bike alongside kid for ~30min at a slowwww pace during our afternoon outing. Still feeling fatigued and post-nasal drip in throat.

Day 13
Went to work. Still feeling fatigued and post-nasal drip in throat. Walked 1/2mi with stroller after work, watched kid at playground for 20min, walked 1/2mi home... cried because I was so exhausted by a 21min mile and then fell asleep on couch. This is the first day I really felt depression setting in.

Day 14
Only got ~8 hours of sleep and felt really fatigued upon awaking. If I didn't have work, I definitely would have just stayed in bed. Left work around 3:30, picked up kids, and then came home, cried, and just crashed in bed... for fourteen hours.

Day 15
Woke up with some chest tightness, headache, more fatigue, and feelings of depression. Got myself out of bed, put on a pretty dress and tried to "fake it 'til you make it" with a trip to the farmers' market and then cheering for kiddo at soccer. Cried more on the way home from all that, and spent several hours just staring off into space feeling depressed.

Felt mentally a bit better at an afternoon family excursion, and even stayed awake with husband to watch part of a Netflix show after kids' bedtime.

Day 16
Woke up on my own around 6am, laid in bed for another hour with light headache and some chest tightness. No nap today, and felt mentally better thanks to a visit from a friend's family.

Day 17
Another week of work. Felt tired on the way into the office and wanted to close my eyes while driving. No problems during the day, though. Did a short, slowwwww walk with the littlest (0.25mi @ 48min/mi) and definitely felt a bit of chest tightness but nothing major.

Day 18
Good night of sleep IN MY OWN BED for the first time in forever. Slight headache and stuffy nose upon waking. Did a short stroller walk (.75mi @ 19:15/mi avg) and definitely felt like I'd done an easy 5K based on effort exerted. Also did 10min of relaxation bedtime yoga with a focus on breathing.

Day 19
Terrible night of sleep due to t-storms and thinking about ALL THE THINGS. Went to bed at 9pm, was up to pee at 1am, up again with storms at 3am, and then didn't really get back to sleep until 4:30ish... and up at 6:30am. Good news is that I was still functional in the morning for some home work. I'm finally starting to see some progress on the fatigue side, and am grateful. Slight stuffy nose/headache/chest tightness upon waking, but only a bit of tightness during the day.

Did a lunch walk with my husband and felt, again, like I was running easy instead of walking, but so so grateful to be out there able to do SOMETHING.

Days 20-27
Lots of post-nasal drip-ish dry throat that seemed to subside most days, but return for nights/mornings. Had terrible neck/upper back pain beginning on Day 22, despite no changes in bed/pillow. Did 3 and 4mi walks with the stroller on the weekend days, and had to take 1-1.5 hour naps each day. Had some watery eyes and congestion, chest tightness, and generally felt heavy. Lots of problems staying asleep.

What's Next
I've read ALL the medical journal articles over the past month, consulted various medical professionals, athletes and coaches, and advice is really a mixed bag. I think I'm going to try to do regular, easy 10-15min walks each day and mix in a few longer ones, as I can with the fatigue. Still trying to find something that works for me to get and stay asleep, but that's going to be a challenge since our little one just caught RSV from school... Sigh.

Post-COVID

This week's been better than last, which is really all I can ask for these days. I'm able to function in my daily life (huge improvement), and only seem to need about 10 hours of overnight sleep, instead of my previous 12-14.

During the week, I aimed to do a short after-dinner walk in the neighborhood most nights, and improved from a quarter mile where I had chest tightness on Monday to a comfortable ~1.5mi without problems by the end of the week.

Saturday morning, I met my training partner in the middle of her double digit run for a couple miles of walking. It felt so good to be back out before the sun with a friend, even if we were only walking. I planned on doing 2mi, felt great after that, and opted to add one more. I felt good after that, and closed with a quarter mile jog, which also felt great.

...but then I was really tired, and took a 1.5hr nap, woke up, and was still pretty "off" the rest of the day.

I'd hoped to take my little one to the river Sunday for a run/walk, but wasn't up for any running, and kept a slow walk instead... followed by another hour nap.

On the bright side:
  • exercise feels good, and I'm not suffering from any weird heart rate stuff or noticeable chest tightness anymore
  • I don't need extra naps to get through my normal daily life, and have resumed eating dinner with my family instead of crashing as soon as I get home
Still trying to figure out what the best approach for me is going to be to ramp back up, but I've got hope and a much better attitude than weeks past.

COVID, cont.

It's been a hard week. I can't workout at all... like, we're talking not even walking. I attempted a 10min walk to the neighborhood playground, 20min rest while kid played, and 10min slow walk back... and was so exhausted I slept for 14 hours the next day. It's a really tough existence.

I've been injured enough to be able to cope with not running, but I cope by lifting. That's too intense for my post-COVID fatigue body right now. If I can't lift I walk. Even a 15min walk is, evidently, too much for me. If I can't walk, I do yoga. Yoga is a challenge because twisting my arm a certain way hurts my wrist, as do many of the poses I gravitate towards. If I can't do yoga, I spend more time with my family. I can't do that because I'm really in fatigue mode. I sleep 10-12 hours a night, work part-time, and then come home exhausted to the point where I just go right into my basement bedroom and sleep for another 12 hours.

I'm too tired to do any of these things. I can't even use my right wrist yet because it's still sprained from the hike almost a month ago. I can't drink because of the anti-inflammatory meds I'm on for that. It's just a vicious downward cycle right now...

Sigh.

COVID

Week-beginning Thoughts:

I feel like death.

Monday
Laid in bed all day with crippling headache.

Tuesday
Laid in bed all day with crippling congestion and headache

Wednesday
Laid in bed most of the day with congestion and body aches

Thursday
Had hoped to work from home today, but instead spent pretty much the entire day sleeping... ugh.

Friday
Laid in bed about half the day, did 1mi slow walking, with a nap in the middle.

Saturday
Finally tested negative. Walked 1.5mi and took another three hour nap.

Sunday
Walked 2.5mi and didn't need a nap. Finally on the upswing.

Total Weekly Mileage: 0.0

Week-ending Thoughts:
I cannot remember the last time I literally had zero miles for a seven-day span, much less a ten day span... Oof.

No More Mile Training/COVID

Week-beginning Thoughts:

Starting work this week... let's see how it all goes...

Monday
Did: 3.11mi on treadmill @ 9:48/mi avg, LIIFT 4 Week 7 arms

Tuesday

Scheduled: 10KTuesday with pushes on hills
Did: as scheduled = 6.32 @ 8:57/mi avg
I remember the last time I did this workout, and how it was basically a 6.3mi tempo run iwth NO reprieves. This time, I opted to be a bit more discretionary about what constituted a "hill".

Wednesday
Scheduled: rest or 3-5mi easy
Did: 2mii @ 9:48/mi avg
Ran a bit before my kids' race, and enjoyed dinner out with friends afterwards.

Thursday
Scheduled: idk
Did: LIIFT4 Week 7 Full Body HIT
After a late couple of nights, and storms forecast, I opted to make this is no-run day. Did a workout in the AM instead, but my legs just felt insanely heavy.

Also heard today that the Atlanta Track Club 1mi race I'd been making a pitiful attempt to train for has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. I could not be happier about this. This training already wasn't going well, and now I have ZERO reason to keep up with it. :)

Friday
Did: 1.75mi WU, 2x2mi tempo, 5min jog between, 1mi CD = 7.61mi @ 9:06/mi avg
I tagged in on my TP's workout today and was grateful for the "slow" intervals. She was hitting 8 flats easily, but I was opted for more on the 8:30ish side.

Set 1: 8:36/8:26
Set 2: 8:36/8:18

Felt good about this one, but also glad to be done.

...unfortunately, by the end of the day, I'd come down with a headache, body aches, and fever. Looks like COVID got spread around at Tuesday's chorus practice, and I was one of many to come down with it.

Saturday - COVID
Isolated and slept in basement

Sunday - COVID
Isolated and slept in basement

Total Weekly Mileage: 18.9

Week-ending Thoughts:
This "staying healthy" thing is really not working out for me this year...
