Chicago Marathon Training: Week 7/20

This week was NOT a good start to marathon training. I let myself fall into the old "this is easy, so I'll do more" trap. :/

Days Run: 7 <-- that's a problem

Miles Run: 36.12
Longest Run: 10.11
Strength/Cross-training: 5 days of stretching/hip strengthening

How I plan to fix this: Do NOT get sucked into the "oh, people are running and I want to join them" thing. Plan my rest day each week and decide to do something fun with family or an item from the household "to do" list that day so I don't have time to run.

Monday

Did: Peachtree Road Race @ 9:15/mi

Tuesday

Scheduled: 6PRO
Did: 6PRO @ 9:51/mi avg
The things we do for the hashtag... Brandi and I were the lone runners for this morning's 5am #10KTuesday. It's kind of fitting that the founding members would be the only two crazies to go run ANOTHER 10K after a hard effort at Peachtree less than 24 hours earlier.

This run absolutely sucked. It was disgustingly hot and humid out (to the point where, if I'd trusted my light-up vest not to chafe me, I probably would have run in just a sports bra and shorts). Our first mile was a 10:37. I can't remember the last time we started out that slowly and felt like we were actually trying. Oof.

That said, we had a great time running together, catching up on race day stories, and dreaming of the beautifully cool weather we should have in Chicago. The run also turned out to be one heck of a progression run:

10:37/ 10:02/ 9:32 (we got excited about the halfway "pause")/ 9:55/ 9:46/ 9:27

Wednesday
Scheduled: 4 easy
Did: 4.12 @ 10:03/mi avg
Since we didn't have chorus last night, and I wanted to test out the hip a bit before today's PT appointment, I met up with Brandi and Birgit for an "easy four".

Hot. Humid. Oof. Really grateful to have had support on this run. Hip felt relatively fine, just more of a tightness in my glute than anything else...

Thursday
Scheduled: 3 PRO
Did: 3.39 @ 8:41/mi
I had a stomach thing last night that kept me from my morning run with Brandi, but still wanted to get in my mileage, so I toughed it out and went for a lunch run. Surprisingly, the heat wasn't too bad. I ended up being able to run comfortably at a pretty fast pace. The worst part of the run was that I hadn't mapped out a route ahead of time, so I was aimlessly meandering around Piedmont Park until my watch beeped... which I realized was off after I clocked the first mile in 5:59 due to some wonky GPS. :P Ended up with a little more than I wanted mileage-wise, but no harm, no foul.

Piedmont Park

Friday
Scheduled: off
Did: 4mi @ 8:29/mi

This is going to bite me in the a--. I know it is.

So, if I know it's wrong to skip a rest day, then why'd I do it? Honestly, because I hadn't truly realized how long it had been since I'd had a rest day. Peachtree being on Monday really threw my schedule off, and having two "unscheduled" rest days before that due to the hip also made it seem like I hadn't really run as much as I had. Oops.

We had a HUGE crowd this morning for "easy" miles. So much for easy miles. I'd assumed (wrongly) that J+C would be taking it easy for them, which would be around a ~9. Nope. We took off like lightening, and then, once we were doing it, I "had" to keep it, because, honestly, I was still really conversational. Why slow down when you're "fine", right?

Oh, hey... about that "easy four".... :P

Saturday
Scheduled: 9-11
Did: 10.11 @ 9:22/mi average
Today was the official kickoff for the Atlanta Track Club's fall training season. It was also the first real LSD run of Brandi's and my Chicago training. Since the ATC group only had four on the schedule, and we had Run Leader responsibilities beginning at 6am, we met up at 5am to run 6 together.

The run was HARD, partially because I'd been up since 1:30am due to the potato, partially because I'd pushed so hard yesterday. We stopped at the halfway point so that I could stretch out my hip (proactively), but, otherwise, kept a really good pace, much faster than I'd planned on. That said, I was really, really, glad to be done with our sixth mile.

MARATHONNNNNNNNNN!

We had about an hour of "downtime", where we got briefed on the plan for today and the rest of the season with the rest of the Run Leaders, chatted with participants, and had a good ol' time getting mentally prepared for the same hilly four mile route that we did last year.

about half of the fall 5K/10K, half, and full run leaders

high kickin' warm-ups

I ran with the 9min group, which covers 9:00-9:55/mi, and was pretty shocked at how fast that pace felt. We had a little over 300' of elevation gain in the four mile route, and our splits were 9:21, 8:54, 9:24, and 9:09. The run felt a bit hard, but I think part of that was the elevation, part the fact that I've been pushing hard all week, and, again, the lack of sleep. Still, I really enjoyed being back in the "distance training" mindset. I got a chance to talk to about six different participants, some of whom are training for their first marathon, and always love hearing about participants goals for the season. :)

After the run, it was a little bit of standing around and answering questions about the Chicago Marathon (for which I'm the ATC ambassador), and then hopping in the car to visit another motherrunner friend, Beth, in Greenville for the weekend.

Sunday
Scheduled: 30XT
Did: 2 with stroller @ 10:46/mi (some walking), plus 2mi walking around my alma mater
I couldn't resist getting in a run with Beth/Dargan, but am super grateful we kept it to two. First, I was tired. Second, it was a stroller run. Third, her neighborhood might be just as hilly as mine. Oof! Still, a very fun morning with a great friend... and our sons :D

two exhausted boys with their mamas :D

Also, I didn't even THINK about my hip at all today :D It's feeling 100% fine again. YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY!

Also, here's to the kickoff of Chicago Marathon training:
We have two pairs of training partners going to Chicago from ATC.
I got us a four pack of coasters (one for each of us) for motivation :)
