...getting x-rays at the sports orthopedist's office.
Why? Because my hip rebelled yesterday. I've had off-and-on soreness near my iliac crest since late March, that I've managed quite effectively with the help of my sports massage guy. When it came back again after 10KTuesday, I decided to spend Wednesday night doing some hardcore lacrosse ball and foam roller work.
Perhaps that was a bad plan, because SpeedworkThursday was a little painful. Never enough to stop running, though, just enough to think about stopping, and then it would go away, or I'd shift gears and it would feel better. It wasn't sharp or constant, so I kept running.
By the time I got to my car, all I could think about was putting some ice on it. I even postponed my shower to do that. :/
The rest of the day was rough. I made an appointment at my sports orthopedist's office (they were able to fit me in Friday-- yay!), and spend far too long asking Dr. Google for exercises and advice for iliac crest soreness in postpartum runners. I found a few exercises for hip strengthening, and learned that I definitely had a problem, because I couldn't do hip drops or single legged squats very effectively at all on my left side.
I cancelled my Friday morning run with Brandi, iced more, and had to rely on Jerry to do a lot of the Holden carrying/moving stuff until today's appointment. Today, I felt much better, but still noticed the same ache/soreness in my hip. :P
Good News:
- x-rays didn't show any structural trouble
- likely a muscular/tendinitis sort of thing
- got a handout of stretches/exercises for hip trouble
Bad News:
- PA couldn't really identify any root causes and referred me to PT for eval, dry needling, and treatment
- first available PT appointment was next Thursday
- still unsure about ability to complete Peachtree running
- pretty sure I'll be skipping next #10KTuesday :(
Current Plan:
- no running today/tomorrow
- do exercises (from my PA, Dr Google, and some friends' PT-prescribed hip handouts)-- they really did make me feel a ton better yesterday
- trial two mile easy run on Sunday morning --> base PTree effort off of that, but it will NOT be a PR effort
Reflections:
Injuries suck no matter when they happen. At least this is something that isn't serious, doesn't affect my quality of life too much, and isn't (at least not yet) impacting a goal race. I've already accomplished all my 2016 goals except the marathon, and, let's face it, I wasn't exactly mentally geared up to do anything extraordinary at Peachtree anyways. This minor setback gives me a little vindication for opting out of a hard effort for PTree, and I might still be able to have an incredible experience pacing a friend or two, depending on how Sunday goes.
If not, I can at least walk the race, get my shirt, and enjoy a great day with friends before and after.
