2 Weeks to Alpharetta Women's Half

Week-beginning Thoughts:

Um, it's Thursday, so idk...

Monday
Planned: lift
Did:  nope
I think I might've done some yoga in the morning, but that's it. Had a stressful day at work and just spent the evening watching the season finale of Loki.

Tuesday
Planned: 1mi WU, 8x800m w/1-2min recovery, 1-2mi CD for 10KTuesday
Did: as scheduled = 6.97mi @ 8:51/mi avg, MBF Week 3 Legs
Was NOT feeling this workout when I started, but mentally told myself "it's just a couple 800m".  I was hoping for sub-8s on all of them, and would've honestly liked closer to a 7:15-7:30, but knew I didn't have the mental energy for that. The first two were good, and then they got harder... much harder by the end. I spent the bulk of the run wondering why I felt so sluggish despite the marathon training (which I basically stopped mid-August, so it's been two months... probably has something to do with it) and the cooler weather (though the humidity's still hanging around), and doubting my ability to want to push at the level I'd have to push to hit a half PR in a couple weeks.

Paces weren't bad, especially for doing these on the road:
3:55, 3:46, 3:41, 3:49, 3:52, 3:52, 3:50, 3:33 (not a typo on that last one)

Then I did the leg workout I had planned to do about six days ago... heh.

Wednesday
Planned: easy 5mi
Did: 5.03mi @ 9:34/mi avg
Oh, hey there faster easy pace! Today was the first day I felt like the weather had a positive impact on my pace... or maybe it was just the conversation we had on the run, which was really more like a venting/therapy session.

Thursday
Planned: 2mi WU, 6mi solid, 2mi faster, 2mi CD = 12
Did: run as scheduled = 12.07mi @ 9:07/mi avg, 2.66mi lunch walk
I was kind of dreading this workout, but also relieved that it was "only" solid miles. Mentally breaking up a 12mi workout into small pieces and parts definitely helped me today. I was able to have a full conversation the entire time, which told me I wasn't working too hard, but, man did it feel tough. I couldn't pinpoint my limiting factor, but maybe it was just my mind. After two of the solid miles, I was mentally toying with the idea of breaking this up into 3x2mi (and switching with Saturday), and probably would have done it if I didn't have my training partner with me. It's easy to switch a workout on the go when you're alone, but harder if you have to verbalize and explain it to someone else.

Super proud of this one, and maaaaaybe starting to believe I'm not as out of shape as I thought. Still not where I thought I should/could/would be (my recent marathoner training partner seemed to be handling the pace better than me! lol), but pleased.

WU: 10:12, 9:49
Solid: 8:55, 9:03, 8:56, 8:40, 8:51, 8:59
Faster: 8:26, 8:07
CD: 10:01, 9:56

Friday
Planned: easy 5mi
Did: 5.12mi @ 9:54/mi avg
These runs just aren't feeling easy like I'd thought.

Saturday
Planned: 2mi WU, 2x3mi or 3x2mi @ 8:00 or less, 2mi CD
Did: as scheduled = 10.52mi @ 9:04/mi avg
I had absolute zero confidence in my ability to hit anything close to an 8:00 this morning... but I pulled it off.

Set 1: 7:59/, 7:50, 7:49
The first mile and second weren't too bad. I had to focus, but they felt alright. The third was a lot harder, partially to the elevation. I was definitely breathing hard.

Set: 8:05 ,8:12, 8:06
While these were slower, I'm still incredibly proud of them. I really wanted to give up and do this set slower than the first, but was encouraged by the first mile's split, and kept going. Even though I was slower than I'd wanted, hills, bumpy sidewalk, traffic, etc. played some role. I'm super proud that I didn't give up there and kept pushing for a solid finish.

Today was definitely a mental success. While I'm certain that I don't have the fitness to make my mind want to go for a half PR next weekend,  I still feel great about what I did.

Sunday
Planned: 8-10mi easy
Did: 6.40mi @ 9:42/mi avg
I realized during yesterday's cool-down that 8-10mi was more of a marathon taper Sunday run than a half, and called an audible to 6-8 instead.

Total Weekly Mileage: 46.1

Week-ending Thoughts:
I feel a lot better than I did last week, but still am not mentally ready to go for anything spectacular next week. I was pretty discouraged by the idea that I pushed as hard I I did on Saturday and still would've been barely sub-2 if I'd kept the same average pace to finish out the half. I think anything sub-2 will be a victory for me, which is a testament to my mental state.

3 Weeks to Alpharetta Women's Half

Week-beginning Thoughts:

Meh. Idk.

Monday
Planned: lift
Did:  20min yoga (AM), MBF Full Body Week 2 (PM)
Didn't feel like intensity this morning, and opted into yoga instead of a cardio/fast-paced workout.

Tuesday
Planned: Solid 10KTuesday (8:45-9:10 pace), MBF Week 1 Core 2
Did: Solid 10KTuesday = 6.55mi @ 8:55/mi avg
Thank goodness for friends. I'm glad I declared my intent pre-run, because I totally would've backed out if no one knew I was "supposed to" run solid. The first mile of WU went by far too quickly for my liking, and I felt like slowing down the entire "solid" part... but I was also comfortably talking the whole time, and my training mate for today loved reminding me that meant I was totally in my comfort zone regarding pace.

Had a work deadline that took my evening up, so I skipped core, but plan on doubling up tomorrow... maybe?

Wednesday
Planned: MBF Week 3 Lower Body, 4mi easy
Did: 4.05mi @ 10:14/mi/avg
Really tired this morning and just didn't feel like getting up quickly enough to lift pre-run. Then I really liked the idea of having time to calmly get ready for the day pre-kid-wakeup post-run, so I did that instead.

Thursday
Planned: 1mi WU, 4x1mi @ 7:30-8:00/400m, 1mi easy, MBF Week 2 Core 1
Did: run as scheduled = 7.26mi @ 8:50/mi avg
I think I've learned that I was really too ambitious with this "strength workout every day" plan for this week. I'm not sure when I thought I would actually do this core workout, since track days mean a 3:45am alarm anyways, and there's just no getting up earlier than THAT to work out (funny story: a few years ago it was "no way am I ever setting an alarm earlier than 4:30", so obviously that isn't set in stone).

Like Tuesday, I struggled again with my workout, mentally. It was so much easier to run fast/hard when I was just running as company for my training partner. Doing it for me is harder.

The 10:49 pace for the warm-up was faster than I wanted to go, and I was grateful I'd given myself wiggle room on the mile pace. I knew I could hit 8:00, but was hoping for something closer to 7:30, especially since I knew I really should have been hitting 7:15-7:20s if I want to actually be training for the half.

Mile 1: 7:49
I felt decent through this one, and enjoyed the mental game of breaking the mile into four laps.
Mile 2: 7:49
Really wanted this one to be my last one after the first lap, but kept grinding through. It wasn't a hard pace, but I had to concentrate, and that required mental effort.
Mile 3: 7:40
The lights on the track came on a lap into this one, and I picked up the pace unconsciously. I was pretty pleased with the split, especially since I hadn't really noticed just how even my first two had been.
Mile 4:  7:40
After #3 being 7:40, I thought, "sure would be nice to have a 7:30 last one", but I wasn't willing to put in enough even effort up front to make that happen.

At no point during the workout was I truly pushing myself. I never felt out of breath, pushed myself to the line, or anything like that... but it was one big mental "blergh", and I definitely took my recovery 400s at snail pace.

Workouts like this leave me wanting to run the half as a fun stroller event instead of trying for something that seems crazy out of reach, like an 8-flat pace half. Yeah, it's back to 100% humidity, I haven't been on the track for a month, I've been stressed with work/family/health, and my body's reacclimating to strength training... but I've been pretty discouraged by how running has felt since my marathon.

Friday
Planned: MBF Week 3 Lower Body, 4-6mi easy
Did: 3.26mi @ 10:04/mi avg, MBF Week 2 Core 1
I struggled to get out of bed again today. I set my alarm the night before telling myself I'd get up, do an MBF, and then run an easy 4. Instead, I laid in bed an extra ten minutes, sent a message to my therapist, and forced myself to get out and run some miles. It was so insanely moist this morning.

I kept mentally bargaining with myself, kind of wanting to do 4mi, but also knowing I didn't have the time to do that and the MBF workout I'd told myself I really ought to do. I ended up turning around early and telling myself I could only run 3 if I did the MBF. I finished the run absolutely disgustingly drenched (we're back to 96% humidity... in October), and really did not want to drip on my floor... but I hadn't run four miles, and had enough time, so.... no excuses.

I put a yoga mat on the floor and pushed through a core workout... and felt good for having done so, even though my right achilles was bugging me during the workout. I'm hoping it's just a result trekking around a construction site in steel-toes yesterday for work. It didn't bother me at all on the run, so guess we'll see?

Saturday
Planned: 10-12mi easy run, MBF Week 2 Core 1
Did: 10.09mi @ 9:50/mi avg, 3.24mi stroller walk with little one @ 18:16/mi avg, 2.11mi stroller walk with big one @ 17:37/mi avg
Taped ankle, and it help up alright today. While I had a little soreness, I'm confident it'll go away soon. Had a great run with my training partner, had a little time at the park with my family before heading over to the greenway to support my chorus director in her walk for Spasmodic Dysphonia with one kid, and then back to another part of the greenway with the other kid to cheer for some friends doing virtual Boston. What a day.

Sunday
Planned: 2mi WU, 2x2mi @ 7:30/5min jog, 2mi CD, MBF Week 3 Upper
Did: 1.5mi WU, 2x2mi/7min, 1mi CD = 6.97mi @ 8:54/mi avg
Felt kind of blerghy this morning, but got up and got it done on our family outing to the riverside trail. I opted for a shorter warm-up to facilitate family time, and then got into the workout.

I really had no confidence that I'd hit 7:30 for a single mile, much less 2. I thought I'd be lucky to make it around an 8 flat with how I felt, and was already mentally planning on cutting the workout before I started. My first mile was a 7:45, and it was h-a-r-d, but I was able to rally and hit a 7:34 for the second.

OK, I thought, maybe I'm not as crazy out of shape as I thought. I had to walk the first bit of my 5min recovery, and was grateful I had a full five minutes between intervals instead of only three like we'd had in marathon training.

The second set was much harder. I locked into a 7:30 for the first quarter mile, but it was awful, and I couldn't hold it. My breathing was tough, and I was just totally spent. It was a mental victory to not stop after a mile and to push through the second one.

I could tell I was really ready to be done because I got through a one mile cool-down and then decided to just walk it in. I never walk it in, even when I've already hit my cool-down mileage.

Set 1: 7:45/ 7 :34
Set 2: 7:45 / 7:45

Total Weekly Mileage: 38.2

Week-ending Thoughts:
  • I feel out of shape and icky and don't really see anything great happening at the Women's Half at the end of the month.

4 Weeks to Alpharetta Women's Half

Week-beginning Thoughts:

I'm planning on taking the week to enjoy fall running, get back to lifting regularly, and try to game plan some good workouts for the next three weeks until the Alpharetta Women's Half... where I might go for something solo, might run with baby in the stroller for funsies, might try to get a teammate to go for a goal with me, or might do something else completely different.

Monday
Planned: lift
Did:  MBF Full Body Week 1
Felt nice to lift.

Tuesday
Planned: easy 10K
Did: 6.34mi @ 9:40/mi avg
This run felt harder than it should have. Weather was perfect, but my legs just didn't want to turn over.

Wednesday
Planned: MBF Week 2 Lower Body, 4mi easy
Did:
This was nice. I haven't lifted in forever, and definitely felt the burn... with 10 and 15lb dumbbells. :/

Thursday
Planned: 1mi WU, 2mi @ 7:30, 1mi easy, 2mi @ 7:30, 1mi CD; MBF Week 1 Core 1
Did: MBF Week 1 Core 1
I'm loving strength workouts again, but didn't have the motivation to get up and out for an intense workout this morning. Maybe I'll run tonight?

Nope. No run. Oh well.

Friday
Planned: MBF Week 2 Lower Body, 4mi easy
Did: MBF Week 2 Lower Body, 4.09mi @ 8:58/mi avg, 4mi walk
Mmm. It's really nice to do both lifting AND running. I think it warms my legs up too. I ended up having an easy first mile (10:01), and then enjoying some 8:46/8:43/8:28/7:58 action on the run.

Saturday
Planned: 8-12mi solid long run
Did: 10.23 @ 8:50/mi avg
Out of town training partner + track club program in need of extra Run Leads = trip down to Atlanta to run with the marathon training group. I knew I could easily run with the 9s, but ended up being needed more by the 8s. While the 8:23 first mile wasn't uncomfortable, I knew that I wouldn't be able to hold that for the double digit mileage. I settled in with one participant around and 8:40 pace, and held that comfortably for a bit, but I was super grateful that most of the group turned around at the 5mi mark. The bulk of our group wanted to run closer to an 8:25 for the back half, and that was not something I felt like. I met up with them at water stops, and then was able to catch a couple 9-something to run the last bit with... which was good, since I was pretty much dead thanks to the humidity and heat.

Didn't refuel properly post-run and ended up feeling rough in the afternoon until I'd gotten enough of the right stuff in my body again around dinner. Lessons learned...

Sunday
Planned: easy run + MBF Week 2 Total body
Did: 4.52mi @ 9:43/mi avg
Family run this morning. I had a bit of an unintentional progression run, starting at a mid-10 and dropping to a sub-9, but it definitely felt sluggish. Spent kid naptime meal prepping (apple meatballs, hard-boiled eggs, roasted squash/zucchini/cauliflower mix, roasted asparagus, and making littlest's lunches) instead of lifting.

Total Weekly Mileage: 29.0

Week-ending Thoughts:
  • This not-even-30-mi-week felt a lot harder than I think it should have. Maybe it's just adding back in the lifting sessions?
  • Looking forward to having my training partner back next weekend.

(not my) Marathon Week

Week-beginning Thoughts:

What comes next? With my primary training partner headed to Germany for Berlin this week, I'm on my own more or less to do whatever I want. I think I'll take the week and just do whatever I feel like each day. Maybe I'll do some lifting. Maybe a long run on Friday? Maybe I'll loaf around and just let my body and mind recover from a pretty intense last few days (months?) of STUFF.

Monday
Did:  three full push-ups
Yep. That was it.

Tuesday
Did: 6.31mi @ 9:54/mi avg
Slow, humid 10KT.

Wednesday
Did: MBF Week 1, Day 1: Lower Body
This was nice. I haven't lifted in forever, and definitely felt the burn... with 10 and 15lb dumbbells. :/

Thursday
Did: 5.18mi @ 10:08/mi avg
Oooof. Not lifting in forever = SO SORE ALL OVER. This run was our first day of beautiful fall weather, but my pace did NOT reflect that.

Friday
Did: 8.10mi @ 9:42/mi avg, MBF Week 1: Day 3: Upper Body
Treated myself to an upper body workout (lower half is still SPENT from Wednesday), and could already feel the muscles breaking down and stressing in the first set with a 15lb weight... Oof, I'm so out of lifting shape. :P

Enjoyed a nice solo run for no prescribed distance or time-- just running wherever and however far I wanted.

Saturday
Did: 4.03mi @ 8:45/mi avg
Wanted to get a run in before the kids woke up today, so I went out solo. Wasn't planning on anything, but felt GOOD for the first time in two weeks, so I opted for a progression run. First mile was a 9:40, and I figured I'd slowly tick down to just under a 9:00 at the end of the four.

Nope.

9:40, 9:06, 8:27, 7:47

That felt GOOD. Really good. I'm finally starting to recover physically from my illness, my marathon, and even from the initial profound deafness of SSHL. So grateful to be improving, even if it's incomplete.

Isn't that just the prettiest progression pace chart ever?

Sunday
Did: 6.28mi @ 8:52/mi avg
"Joined" my training partner for 10K of her Berlin marathon this morning. Kind of cool to think that we were running at the same time, despite being an ocean apart. She was also running a good bit faster than me.

Total Weekly Mileage: 29.9 (seriously?)

Week-ending Thoughts:
  • Grateful for running, and for a bit of improvement on the SSHL front
  • Enjoying lifting again. I'll probably try to do this 2-3 times a week for the foreseeable future

Sunday, September 19, 2021

(not my) Marathon Training: Week 17/18

Week-beginning Thoughts:

  • I'm grateful I can still run, and that my balance isn't compromised by my SSHL (and more info)
  • If you run a marathon and don't really tell anyone about it, did it even happen?

Monday
Scheduled: Rest
Did:  Rest

Tuesday
Scheduled: 2 miles WU 5 x 1k at 10K pace with 2 min rest between sets 5 x 200m at 5K pace with 30 sec rest between sets 2 miles CD
Did: eaaaaaaaaaasy 6.52 @ 10:39/mi avg
Oof. Hellllo, legs. Had some rough twinges in my left quad to start, but those worked out over the easy track miles.

Wednesday

Did: 4.01mi @ 10:48/mi avg
Grateful for running, some semblance of normalcy, and a training partner who doubles as a therapist.

Thursday

Another tough night of restless sleep before MRI day. Grateful for running.

Friday
Scheduled: 2 miles WU 2 x (4 miles at HMP + 1 mile easy) 2 miles CD
Did: 5.75mi @ 10:03/mi avg
Met my TP for the back half of her run. It's been kind of nice to "take it easy" this week... though I'm ready to get my legs back and be able to comfortably run faster than a 10min pace soon... Still struggling with sleep... and deafness... but grateful for what I've got.

Saturday
Scheduled: 3-5mi easy
Did: 5.07mi @ 9:50/mi avg, lots of sweaty walking
Took my littlest for a drizzly run at the river, and ended up running into a teammate I haven't gotten to run with for awhile. SO nice to have unexpected company :)

Sunday
Scheduled: 8-11 miles easy
Did: 8.36mi @ 9:49/mi avg, 2mi zoo walk
Enjoyed a wonderful last run with my training partner before she heads off for the Berlin Marathon next week, and a long walk through the zoo with my family.

Total Weekly Mileage: 33.8

Week-ending Thoughts:
  • Grateful to be able to run through life.

When Life Hands You Lemons (reprise): A Random Saturday Morning Marathon

Distance: MARATHONNNNNNNN (26.22)
Previous PR: 4:17:43 (Chicago, 2016)
Result: 4:03:46

 Hey, y'all, remember this:

Pre-"Race" Thoughts:

Two days ago, I decided I was going to run a marathon today.

Why? Because, within twenty four hours, I went from having two highly functioning ears to being profoundly (and very likely permanently) deaf in my right ear (SSHL).

To have something so permanently life-altering come out of NOWHERE... Well, let's just say that dealing with changes in what's for dinner because we're missing an ingredient is hard for me to accept, so you can imagine how I'm handling this.

My training partner had 17mi on her schedule. I'd missed her long 22mi run last week because I was sick in bed. I decided that all I wanted to do was run this s__t out. Maybe I'd do the 22 I'd missed. Maybe I'd say "nah, let's go all the way". I just felt this incredible need to push my body to do something amazing, to prove to myself I was still capable of something, to have control over something... when everything else felt like a freefall.

I'd never planned on actually running a full marathon this training cycle (my training partner is doing Berlin in a few weeks, but I've really just been training alongside her "for support"), but this just kind of felt right. I haven't run in about a week since I've been sick. That counts as a taper, right? Should be fine...

Goals
I thought about making this a real "race report", with my 90/50/10% goals, but, truly, I didn't even know if running the full distance (at any pace) was a 90% or a 10% goal until I was about 10mi in this morning.

90% Sure I could run the 17 with my partner, at a respectable pace
50% Sure I could do 20
10% Sure I could do the full marathon, or would even want to

Ultimately, I settled on these, if I was able to run the full distance:
90% Goal: 4:45
50% Goal: 4:30
10% Goal: 4:15

The Night Before
I took the day off work because I couldn't possibly focus on buildings when, at least once an hour, I'd have a thought about how being deaf in one ear will affect my life that sent me into hysterical crying. All I wanted to do was Google everything I possibly could about this new diagnosis, and just let my feelings take priority over everything else.

I didn't really prepare myself very well at all for a marathon. By 4pm, the only things I'd eaten were a sandwich and latte at brunch with husband at 10:15am. I tried to find some motivation to make tomorrow feel like a marathon, and made a half-baked attempt at my usual pre-26.2 meal of frozen macaroni and cheese (for the sodium), ham, and broccoli. I barely made my calorie count for the day, thanks to an old-fashioned on the side.

We stayed up later than I wanted with family game night. I found myself distracted with sniffles (sick? just residual from so much crying? who knows...), and thoughts of how I really hadn't prepared at all for the run tomorrow.

I took a few minutes before bed to layout some clothes, KT tape (to prevent chafing between my sports bra and back), and an old pace band I never used from my last real marathon race (Chicago, 2016). I threw some Gatorades in the freezer, and decided I would run the 3-4mi down to the river to meet my training partner, just to get some extra distance banked. Then I went to bed, and tried to sleep with the constant ringing sounds I'll likely have forever in my newly deaf ear.

The "Plan"
4:25am Run 3-4mi solo down to the river
5:00am Meet Training Partner for her 2mi WU
5:20am Training Partner begins 12-15mi @ MP. I run.
7:30am-ish Training Partner and I finish her run. My husband and kids meet me for the last 10K, assuming I feel like it
8:30am-ish Family hangout time at the playground

Course? Nope. We didn't really have that planned out. My TP had a loose route planned, and I just kind of figured I'd keep running after that however far I wanted to.

The Morning Of
I woke up at 3:30am, 15min before my alarm, and came to the realization that there was no way I could get everything I needed down to the river, because I was running from the house. There went my plan of having a couple water/Gatorade bottles "on course" and a snack for after the run. Whoops.

I had thoughts of going for a 4:15 (previous PR=4:17), but the only pace band I could find was 4:10. That seemed... ambitious. Like, 10% goal ambitious. While It's totally within my training range and something I can physically do, it's not at all what I wanted to stress about today. Still, I tried to put on the 5 year old tattoo. It didn't work. I scraped off the two small pieces that stuck to my skin, and casually gazed at the 9:3X first mile pace and 2:05 half.

Today was about overcoming something for me. One of the things I saw in a support group for people with my condition (SSHL) was a tattoo idea of the American Sign Language sign for "I love you".

So I took some reflective tape and made the same design on my sports bra for the morning.

I threw a couple Gatorades in my shorts' side pockets, mace and a whistle in the waistband, and a whole bunch of honey stingers in my handheld, and headed off, for whatever the morning held in store.

The Run
Miles 1-3: These felt harder than I wanted them to, but I was pretty pleased that I was keeping around a 9:30/mi pace. At this point, I wasn't sure if I wanted to try to join my TP for her MP miles (but keep them more like a 9-9:15) or just play it safe and hit solid 9:30s for as long as I could.

Miles 4-5: I slowed a bit on these (9:55ish), to let my TP warm-up. We enjoyed nice chatter, with her fully aware of my situation and kindly positioning herself on my left, so I could hear her as we ran.

Miles 6-10: I opted against joining her for her MP miles. If I could just hold a 9:30, I thought, that would give me my best chance for the long run I wanted. I enjoyed running essentially alone through the dark pre-sunrise roads, thinking about anything and everything.

Miles 10-13: As I closed in on 13, I realized I felt great. I hit just under the 2:05 mark, and it was here that I started seriously thinking, "OMG, I can do this. I can run a marathon today, AND I can probably hit a PR." Such a contrast to the last marathon I raced (Chicago, 2016), where I felt spent at the half, and was already just over my goal pace. Having several minutes "banked" where I could positive split (on a flatter/easier part of this course) really helped me, mentally.

Miles 13-18: I hit the lap button at 13.11 on my left wrist watch, and decided I would just look at my average pace to guide me for the rest of the run. I knew I was already well under 9:30 for the first half, so if I could just hit around 9:30 for the second, I'd have it made. My average pace for these miles was closer to a 9:20.

I did have one moment of absolute terror on this run, where my good ear started hearing screeching, ringing noises, that just kept getting louder and weirder. I kept looking around, hoping to see the source. For about half a mile, I started believing that whatever happened in my right ear was happening in my left, which was really crippling. It kept getting louder, too. And then I saw a sad little car dragging part of its body along the ground, at about 5mph, coming up behind me. I have never been so grateful to see a mangled car along the road, especially because the sounds all vanished from my good ear shortly after it was out of sight..

Miles 18-20: I re-joined my training partner around 18, and we chatted about how great I was feeling and how awesomely her miles had gone. While we only ran "together" for four miles today, I never felt alone. I could always see her lights up ahead, or know that, within a mile, we'd be passing each other on our multiple out-and-back route. It was reassuring to know that she was also "out there", pushing hard herself.

Miles 20-21: Some route/schedule issues enabled me to run these miles solo, after dropping my TP at her car, but before I met up with my husband and kids. I've never felt this good at mile 20 of a marathon. I don't think I'd stopped smiling the entire back half of the run. Seeing that average pace on my watch hovering between 9:19-9:22 told me everything I needed:
You're going to do this.

Miles 22-25.5: I joined up with my family for the last 4-5. It didn't feel like a race. It felt like just another Sunday Runday at the river, maybe one of my miler method tempo runs, though, where my husband let me go just enough ahead of him to hear the cheers, but not feel pressured to adjust to his pace. I felt so freaking strong at this point, and kept doing the mental math to see how close I could get to breaking 4:10 if I held a 10min pace for the rest of it.  ...and then realized I could go below 4:05 without too much effort.

Mile 25.5-26.2: This was a weird stretch. I run with both my Garmin and Polar watches (due to how they're hooked up with different rewards programs and social networks). My Garmin usually shorts me on distance (compared to both my Polar and my friends' watches when we run the same route together), and it was really important to me that I hit the full distance on both watches... even if they were almost a quarter mile off from each other.
I hit the distance on my Polar easily in 4:03:46, but had to push hard to get in on my Garmin (4:04:49).

That kick, tho

Reflections
I feel like there's more to say, but it'll have to come at another time. For now, here are the random things in my head:

I'm so proud that I was able to "just go run a marathon" this morning ...and PR by over ten minutes.

I'm a little bummed I didn't try harder from the start, because I totally had a sub-4 in me today. I felt amazing at the end, pushing a 7:00 pace for that last bit. I've never felt better during a marathon.

This Hansons-esque training that my TP's coach has us on is AMAZING.

I'm really grateful for my family, my training partner, and the ability to still be able to run through this. Running has been such an incredible coping mechanism for me over the past 10+ years, and today was one more time that it really delivered.
