(not my) Marathon Training: Week 1/18

Week-beginning Thoughts:
Oh. Looks like I was a week off on the start date for this marathon training thing... Whoopsies.

Monday
Scheduled: MBF Week 3 Total Body, MBF Week 3 Core 2
Did: MBF Week 3 Total Body
Kids are supposed to get up at 6am for the day, but baby's been getting up earlier. I had a 4:45am alarm set so I could get my heavy lifting workout (30min) done before baby woke up (budgeting 15min or so for start/stop to put baby back to sleep), and then finish the 30min of core workout (equipment-free) done while baby was eating breakfast/playing.

Noppppppppe.

Baby was up at 4:30am, walking into our room... I started my workout at 4:50, but had so many up/downs with baby that I didn't finish the first 30min lifting one until 6:05... at which point I had no time to do another 30min of workout, shower, and still get my kids and myself where we needed to be on time. Uggggh.

Tuesday
Scheduled: 2mi WU, 6x300m @ 10K pace up, 30s rest, 300m @ MP down, 90s rest, 2mi CD
Did: 6.25mi @ 10:46/mi avg (didn't stop watch for rest), 1mi stroller walk
First workout of marathon training today = hill repeats. Weeee. Fun fact: the "MP" stands for marathon pace, not mile pace. lol. Got a good laugh out of that one.

I found it weird to have complete rest, not just a recovery jog, between the hill repeats. I also found it really tough to keep 10K and MP paces... ended up running much faster than that....

I didn't actually plan out my paces ahead of time. If you go by my current PR, my 10K pace would be 7:42/mi. If you go by what I should be capable of based on my mile time, it's a full minute faster. If I were training for a marathon, I'd probably train to hit 4:00, a 9:09/mi pace.

not only was this NOT a good pace workout, but, in all cases but one, my downhill pace was faster than my uphill

Lots to learn there...

Wednesday
Scheduled: MBF Week 3 Legs, Core 2
Did: MBF Week 3 Legs, 4.09mi @ 9:12/mi avg, 1mi stroller walk
I don't know if I could say I really did the leg workout this morning. Again, it took me over an hour to complete the ~30min workout, between constantly putting my littlest back to bed... I was in a mooooooood for pretty much the rest of the day. Took some time to reset myself before getting the kiddos from school, and embarked on a HOT, HUMID solo run. Then finished the day with a stroller walk.

Thursday
Scheduled: 2mi WU, 2x2mi @ HM pace with 3min recovery jog in between, 2mi CD
Did: as scheduled = 8.52mi @ 8:37/mi avg
This workout felt good. I loved being back on the track (sooo squishy!), and it was really nice to have what I thought was an "easy" workout, with no fast paces. Since I didn't really care much about pacing, I took Lane 5 and decided to aim for approximately 8min/mi, knowing that I could be a little over the 30s/100m since I was running a consistently longer lap than in Lane 1. This was nice for me, and took a lot of pressure out of the picture. I barely looked at my watch, just ran by feel, checking in every once in awhile, but knowing it was totally fine to be a few seconds "over" due to the bonus distance.

My first one, I missed the actual start mark, and lost about 20-50m, but the remaining splits are for four times around Lane 5:
8:01, 8:11, 8:09, 8:02

So, that shakes out to between 7:39 and 7:29 per mile, with a total distance at that pace of 4.28mi, instead of the prescribed 4. I'm pretty thrilled with that, especially since I only felt like I really had to "dial-in" for the last half of the last mile.

It's fun to be running fast again.

Friday
Did: 5.1mi @ 9:26/mi avg, 1mi walk
Easy mileage in the morning, stroller walk in the eve

Saturday
Scheduled: 60min WU, 10x1min @ 5K/1min @ MP, 20min CD
Did: as scheduled = 10.01mi @ 9:10/mi avg
Enjoyed the easy warm-up and mentally broke this into three segments. The 10x workout actually felt pretty good, and I really enjoyed the push.

Sunday
Did: 7.17mi with double stroller @ 9:35/mi avg
This felt great. :D

Bonus: so freaking excited that my oldest ran their first mile this morning :D :D :D

Total Weekly Mileage: 41.1

Week-ending Thoughts:
Enjoyed this week.
Strength training is impossible while working.

(not my) Marathon Pre-Training: Week 3/4

Monday

Did: MBF Week 2 Total Body
Lifting... crashed HARD overnight

Tuesday
Did: MBF Week 3 Core 1, 10KTuesday @ 9:32/mi avg, 1mi stroller walk

Wednesday
Did: 4.04mi @ 9:20/mi avg

Thursday
Did: 5.00mi @ 8:58/mi avg
Somewhat solid miles.

Friday
Did: 5.55mi @ 9:08/mi avg , lunch walk, stroller walk
Easy miles that ended up being a bit faster than easy. Oops? Added a lunch walk with my husband and an evening stroller walk for a few more miles.

Saturday
Did: 12.12 @ 8:50/mi avg
Ugggghhh. I got up at 1:11am with the baby, and was pretty much up again every 20min with him, the cats, or the older one for everything from a mid-night bathroom trip or request for water to insane meows for food and a toddler carrying a broken bed rail into our room saying, "fix this?" until 3:30am.

If I'd been guaranteed two hours of uninterrupted sleep at that point, I would have 100% bailed on my long run. But, past experience has taught me that chances were pretty slim, so I might as well get up. Glad I did. My training partner and I enjoyed a really great "solid miles" run... and I treated myself to a full, delicious soft pretzel from the farmers' market afterwards.

Sunday
Did: 6.01mi @ 9:11/mi avg, MBF Week 3 Upper Burn
Fun morning at the river with my whole family. It's nice to feel so comfortable at a faster pace like this. Guess those "solid miles" are working ;)

Total Weekly Mileage: 39.1

Week-ending Thoughts:
  • Lifting is still incredibly challenging to fit in, and I'm really missing it in my life.
  • But I'm rocking almost 40mpw and feeling great?

(not my) Marathon Pre-Training: Week 2/4

Week-beginning Thoughts:

None

Monday
Did: MBF Week 1 Core, Week 1 Total Body
Core with the kids in the morning, and then weights when they left.

Tuesday
Did: 10KTuesday @ 9:36/mi avg
Mmmm, easy miles. :)

Wednesday
Did: 7.04mi solid @ 8:51/mi avg
Thought about getting in a workout post-kids' bedtime... but didn't feel energized/into it, so I went to bed early instead.

Thursday
Did: MBF W2 Core 1, 4mi walk, MBF W2 Legs
My 4am alarm came... and i turned it off and slept more. Ah, the perks of not having an accountability partner for a morning workout :P

Friday
Did: 5.07mi @ 9:24/mi avg
Nice easy miles.

Saturday
Did: 13.26 @ 9:25/mi avg
Rouuuuuuuuuugh night of sleep (or lack there of), but still got up and enjoyed a fun half marathon training run. Considered lifting in the afternoon, but crashed over kid's attempted nap.

Sunday
Did: 5.46mi with single stroller @ 9:25/mi avg
A morning zoo trip necessitated an early morning run. I gave my oldest the option of coming with me, and was thrilled by their decision. I don't know how many more times they'll want to come with me, and truly value every single stroller run with my baby/babies.

Might try to do some lifting in a bit if everyone's still asleep after I finish blogging...

Total Weekly Mileage: 37.2

Week-ending Thoughts:
  • First week back in the office = HARD to find time for strength training
  • Loving these longer miles, though

Marathon Pre-Training: Week 1/4

Week-beginning Thoughts:

I'm not running a marathon this year... At least, I don't think I am. My training partner is, though, so that means I'm playing support and running as much of her training with her as I can. If we get into the 20+ mile weeks and I'm still going strong, I might reconsider. At this point, though, I'm not "into it" enough to say "WEEEE, MARATHON".

Also, today is Friday, so we'll see how much of this week's training I remember :P

Monday
Did: nada
I really didn't do anything today? Weird.

Tuesday
Did: 10KTuesday @ 9:25/mi avg
Got up early, did a truncated lifting session pre-run, and then finished wtih MBF Week 1 Day 1 afterwards-- leg buurrrrrrrrrn.

Wednesday
Did: 2.54mi stroller run @ 9:16/mi avg, MBF W1D3 (upper body)
I should've run this morning, but I thought it would be nice to "get s--t done" instead. Nope. Ended up working out at lunch (yay) and fitting in a quick stroller run post dinner.

Thursday
Did: 6.21mi @ 8:40/mi avg, MBF W1D2 (core), 4mi walk
So, training buddy had a "solid run" on her plan-- 8:45-9:05/mi. We haven't had a run where we were aiming for that kind of pace in a loooooooong time and I might have overcompensated. Oops.

Bright side: that run was hard, but it was harder than it should have been. This bodes well for future "solid runs".

Friday
Did: 5.04mi @ 9:07/mi avg
Guess our "easy" pace is more like what our "solid" pace should be. Whoopsies.

Saturday
Did: 10.31mi @ 8:51/mi avg
Yeah, that pace is right. This was another "solid run" assignment. After a 9:40 warm-up mile, we settled into a really consistent 8:50/mi pace... until mile 5, when we started creeping into the 8:30s... and stayed there (maybe that's why we both agreed that miles 8 and 9 felt harder). Whoops.... again. We even tried to slow down the last mile as a "cool-down" and only made it to 8;56.

Still, really cool to see how comfortable this pace can actually be. I wouldn't have gone out and run that fast without someone telling me to, but it wasn't hard. It just had to be a more intentional run than we normally do.

Sunday
Did: 6mi (partially with double stroller) @ 9:03/mi avg
Fun family run at the river today. Might do some lifting/core stuff later, but probably going to skip it because I braided my hair and put on real clothes after my post-run shower.

Total Weekly Mileage: 36.5

Week-ending Thoughts:
I'm intrigued by this "solid run" concept and think it'll work well for me. While I don't have a marathon planned, I am signed up for the Women's Half in October (deferred from last year). I'd originally planned on stroller running that for fun, but maybe I'll try to PR the half. If I'm running this well, there's no real reason not to...

Lazy Week

Week-beginning Thoughts:

I have no idea what's going to happen this week. :P

Monday
Did: nothing
Whoa. I actually literally did nothing today. That's... a first in a really long time. Had lots of work to do, and baby has a double ear infection, so..... yeah.

Tuesday
Did: 10KTuesday @ 8:59/mi avg
Got my second COVID vaccine last night, and opted to sleep in in case I had any side effects. Let my body sleep until 7am, and then felt good so I went for a walk... and ended up running (it was just too perfect not to). Ran a lot faster than usual (rest day? delayed start?), and then ended up feeling the fever side effects mid-day and being down for the count.

Wednesday
Did: 4mi walk, 3.26mi @ 8:14/mi avg (!!!)
Felt human again midday and went for a walk with my husband, worked, and then wanted to run in the evening. It was pretty warm out, but I just felt like I wanted to get out there. My first mile was an 8:47 (!!!), which is a LOT faster than any of my normal runs, but I wasn't pushing. My second mile was an 8:02 (kind of pushed). At that point, I kind of felt like turning this into a progression run, and so I pushed the last mile (7:40). Weeeeeeeee.

Thursday
Did: 4.01mi @ 9:25/mi avg with double stroller
Another afternoon run. Took my kids out to the greenway for a chill four miles. Ended up seeing TWO snakes, including my first copperhead, on the path tonight. Eek.

Friday
Did: 2mi walk at lunch
Got up at 3:19am (thanks, cats) and got a ton of stuff ton, but didn't workout. Made up for it with a lunch walk.

Saturday
Did: 12.25mi @ 9:12/mi avg, 1mi "hike" with family, 4.25mi walk
Enjoyed some "joyful miles" with my training partner (whom I haven't seen in OVER A WEEK-- crazy!) as she began her marathon training base-building, did a "hike" (really a walk through the woods at a nature preserve), and then walked to my parents' place/back with a stop off for ice cream. Pretty solid day.

so strange to still be running at sunrise...

Sunday
Did: 6.25mi total with double @ 9:11/mi avg
Ran with the double today for some seriously joyful miles. With nothing on my schedule, I just ran for the joy of running... and added in a couple bonus tempo mile repeats because I wanted to: 8:01 and 7:51

Total Weekly Mileage: 32.0

Week-ending Thoughts:
  • took this week to "recover"... now I guess I'm recovered and need to get back to the strength training routine too...

C Mile Training: Week 8/8

Week-beginning Thoughts:

I'm in a MUCH better mental state than I was two weeks ago for race week.

Monday
Scheduled: 3-5mi easy or rest
Did: 5.09mi @ 9:35/mi avg
Got up early and started my week off right today. Good thing, too, because I came back to a pretty chaotic day. Kept my nutrition in check, though. Victory!

Tuesday
Scheduled: 10KT, easy
Did: 6.32mi @ 9:35/mi avg
Nice run with friends. Glad today was easy and didn't have strides. Kept my nutrition in check today, too.

Wednesday
Scheduled: 2-3mi easy or rest
Did: 10min yoga, 1mi walk
Yoga in morning, 1mi walk with kiddo in the evening.

Thursday
Scheduled: 2mi WU, MILE TRIAL, 2mi CD
Did: Mile Trial = 6.33mi total @ 9:37/mi avg,4mi walk
Hell yes.

Friday
Scheduled: rest
Did: 2mi of walking
Walked for an afternoon coffee with a coworker, and then another bit around the neighborhood with the fam in the evening. Definitely didn't have to fight the urge to run today with all the work madness.

Saturday
Scheduled: 8mi long run
Did:  45min HIIT/yoga, 8.00mi stroller run @ 9:31/mi avg
Got up early and wanted to do SOMEthing, so I did a 45min "half and half" workout, with 20min of cardio followed by 20min of yoga.

...it wasn't enough to keep my sanity throughout a stressful day, though, so I took the stroller out for a run in the afternoon. I wasn't sure what I wanted to run, but ended up doing the 8 on the schedule. The first bit was nice, but I was feeling it by the end. Afterwards, my legs were spent, which is a huge change from the last mile trial I did, where I didn't feel much.

Sunday
Scheduled: family run
Did: 3.11mi @ 9:23/mi avg with double stroller, few miles of double stroller walking
I woke up this morning not even sure I wanted to run at all, but definitely wanted to get outside and move. Took the kids to the river with a hot coffee, planning on walking a bit, but ended up with a 5K run followed by walk. Felt good.

Total Weekly Mileage: 28.9

Week-ending Thoughts:
  • Don't really have any... probably going to take an easy week and then regroup for the 10x10 or maybe some focused tempo training for Peachtree

Race Report: C Mile Test #2

I've been wanting/trying to hit a 6-minute mile for four years. I've failed multiple times, for a variety of reasons, and been delayed by injuries, losses, pregnancy, and conflicting goals along the way. I failed again today.

I love the feeling of accomplishment I get from pushing myself outside my comfort zone. Doing hard things and constantly exercising my ability to prove I've got more in me than I ever imagined I did is so empowering. No matter what's happening in life, running always makes me feel like I'm in control of something.

Every day I run, I've accomplished something. I'm training for something. I'm making progress on something. The point isn't to hurry up and arrive at a destination or hit a goal (though that can be nice sometimes). It's about enjoying the journey, the continual pursuit of improvement, and conquering the challenges along the way.

Today, I learned what it felt like to push myself to another level.

Today was a great day.

Previous PR: 6:06 (4/8/21, 10/25/20, 10/18/20)

90% Goal: 6:10
50% Goal: 6:04
10% Goal: 5:59
Result: 6:01 (PR!!!!)

so grateful for these women

training partner + coach <3

Training:

Two weeks ago, I finished up a six-week plan designed by my friend and coach, which included: 5-6 runs a week (1 day w/hills or strides, 1 beastly track workout, 1 fartlek/tempo, 1 long run day, and 1-2 easy, short run days) with 30-40mpw.

On Mile Trial day, I wasn't "in it", mentally, physically, or spiritually... and ran yet another 6:06 (at that point, I had THREE 6:06 mile attempts in a row, with one 6:09 preceding them).

all about that 6:06, evidently...

While I wasn't disappointed by the work I didn't put in that day (and, honestly, was pretty pleased that a "bad day" yielded such a consistently strong result), I did want another go at it.

...so Coach had me repeat the last two weeks of the plan and try again.

Before:

It's been another kind of rough week at work, and my littlest hasn't been sleeping well. That's actually worked out well, because I haven't had any time to stress about the mile, or overthink it at all. I've done well with my nutrition (thanks to strategically timed grocery trips, meal planning/prepping, and not having any down time to munch mindlessly). I cut out strength training for the past week because it was "one more thing" to think about that I didn't have the bandwidth for.

Similarly, I've let my evenings be a little more chill, choosing to binge The Queen's Gambit with my husband after the kids go to bed (which really just involves me falling asleep on his chest after about 20min, but it works for us) instead of reading code books (for work), trying to catch up on personal communication, fitting in strength workouts, or trying to execute anything for my multitude of other hobbies/organizations like I usually do in that 30-60min timeframe.

I felt good when I woke up (at 3:45, because that's how my body rolls these days), laid in bed for a bit, and then go myself going for our 5am start time (much later than usual so that our coach could join in the fun).

The weather was perfect... well, almost. After several weeks of mornings in the 50s and 60s, today was a rare 33 degrees with 2-3mph winds. It was just a liiiittle on the chilly side, but I was really happy about the cold snap. I run much better in 30s-40s than I do in the warmer weather.

I met my training partner (who literally got up just to run a bit for fun and cheer for me) and my coach (who I don't think I've seen for any significant length of time in well over a year), and took a moment to be grateful to have these two amazing people in my life, who were literally only awake and here because they wanted to support me.

We ran an easy two mile warm-up, talking a little about pacing/goals. My goal today was not to run a 6:00 mile, or even to PR, but rather to run (3) consecutive 90s laps, and then see what was possible on lap 4.

I chose this goal for a few reasons:

1) I've gone out hot and crashed/burned on multiple past mile attempts

2) Why not try something different?

3) Seeing today as an "execution" trial of hitting splits instead of a "RUN A FAST MILE" helped me SO much, mentally

Coach was planning on pacing me through the first 800m, and then said she'd see what she could do. All I had to do, she said, was stay with her- let her do the work, but stay with her.

Mile:

Lap 1

This lap felt good, just like I thought it would. I loved not having to think about my watch, or my pace. I remember thinking about glancing down at one point, and, before I could, Coach's voice announced our first 200m split: "45- doesn't get any better than that!"

I stayed right on her shoulder through all of it. Around the 300m mark, I saw the back of her singlet: big white letters that said: "YOU GOT THIS", and almost commented aloud. Then I thought better of it, because she'd probably just chastise me (rightfully so) for talking. ;)

We crossed the line just as my teammate said "90, 91".

Lap 2

This lap was harder, but also still manageable. I was able to stay on Coach's shoulder, and just execute. As we crossed the line again, hearing another "90" from my teammate, I prepared for my Coach to drop off, leaving me to the last half solo... but was so happy to see her continue. I think she knew I needed it.

Lap 3

The third lap of the mile sucks. You're exhausted from the first bit, and it's hard and you don't want to keep doing it. I started falling off of Coach's shoulder around the 100m mark of this lap, and she instantly knew it, and picked up the vocal support with things like:

Don't give up.

You look strong. Stay strong.

Dig deep.

You can do this.

I wanted to stop. I wanted to give up. Around the 200m turn, I actually wanted to stop so badly that I started imagining maybe just falling/collapsing on the track. If I fell to the ground, maybe that would be a valid reason to stop? But Coach's "don't give up" was just the message I needed to hear. It might not have mattered if I gave up on myself, but I didn't want to let her down, and that was what got me through the last 200m of that lap.

"88," said my teammate as we crossed the line.

"OMG, OMG. I'm doing it," I thought.

Lap 4

This was the lap I was waiting for. I'd made it through the "hard part" of the race, and now I just had to get around the track one more time.

...and it was HARD.

Coach kept right on with me, and I tried so hard to stay with her, but I was behind, just barely behind, but behind. I knew I wanted to be able to kick, but I couldn't kick yet, because I couldn't hold it for a full lap.

Don't give up.

I couldn't make up the distance I'd lost on her (only a about 3-4 strides, but still distance), but I didn't let it grow. With 200m to go, I'd hoped to be able to kick. We were at 5:18. 42s to go. I could do it, but I'd have to GO.

I knew I couldn't keep a kick for 200, though, and waited until I'd gotten through the curve to start the kick. Spoiler alert: that might not have been the right call.

I'd hoped to catch Coach on the last straightaway, but it didn't happen. I did, however, kick my little heart out, pushing as hard as I could for that 100m stretch.

LOOK AT THAT BEAUTIFUL KICK.

...and then, for the first time ever, I laid down on the track, absolutely spent.

Post-Mile Reflections:

I lapped my watch at 6:01. You might argue that I got my 6:00 mile today. Maybe it took me a second to cross and press "lap"? Our timer (splits below) lapped her watch at 6:02. Maybe she started it early or lapped it late? Or maybe not, and I ran more like a 6:04. Whatever the time is/was, I don't really care. I've used my Garmin for ever mile, relying on my own lapping skills for my "official" times, and I'm calling today a 6:01 based on that.

Whatever the absolute number, though, it's a solid five second PR, and that's huge on a mile.

More importantly, though, I rocked the execution:

recall the first lap had the extra 9m too, which means it was a 90s

I'd wanted a 3:00-3:01 800m. Nailed it.

I'd wanted to stick that pace for a third 400m. Nailed it.

I'd wanted to give it all I had on the last 400m, whatever that was.

Laying on the track after the mile, I didn't think I could have gone any faster.

About a minute after I got up, I was already having, "I wanna do that again. I can go faster" thoughts.

More Reflections:

  • Getting to come home, tell my kids what I did, and having the little one say "Mommy fast Mommy fast Mommy fast" while the older one double high-fived me and did a little "YOU DID IT, MOMMY" happy dance/song was literally the best. The older one's been aware of my training enough to know I've "failed" the last few times, but persisted, and was truly proud of me.
  • I am so proud of my execution today, and so grateful for my friends who were able to be there with me (and those who I talked to before/after online, too)
  • If I didn't give up today because I was afraid of letting someone else down, imagine what I could do once I'm doing it 100% for myself.
  • I've learned so much through this mile training process over the past four years, and I'm truly grateful to be continuously developing as a runner. There's always something new to learn, another method to see how to I react to (mentally and physically), different styles and executions, and constant new challenges. There's always something to work on, and always something to reach towards, but also always something to celebrate.
  • For me, running, began as a way to lose weight, fight depression, and feel a little less guilty about eating so many Nilla wafers. It's turned into the single biggest source of self-confidence in my life, teaching me about diligence and commitment, introducing me to my best friends, and improving my health and well-being along the way.
  • Yay, running.

6:01, y'all. :D

literally burned a hole in my shoes today

guess it's time to retire this pair...

What's Next?

Um, idk... Trying not to run tomorrow? lol.

I'm actually looking forward to some long easy miles in the near future. Maybe I'll try another 10x10 challenge?
